Oppressed By The Line, Beak>, Sad Day For Puppets, Dead Leaf Echo, Beach House & more
November = sick, work, sick, work. Had a backlog of great music so here’s to getting back on track.
1. Oppressed By The Line – Paper Cranes
Very nice space pop. Never would have guessed this came from Texas.
2. Melochrome – Kissing Spree
Power poppy shoegaze off 1999’s The Music We Make, but seems more like a gem from 1991.
3. My Majestic Star – Like Cracked Glass
Swirling psychedelia straight out of Perth, Australia.
4. The Domino State – Big Six Wheel
Big, cavernous rock in the tradition of Secret Machines. Love to hear that guitar freak out.
5. Free Electric State – Hawks
And the hits keep coming with some noisy shoegaze by this NC band.
6. Sad Day For Puppets – Mother’s Tears
Beautiful hushed vocals seep out from this fuzzy rock and roll number.
7. Loop Garou – The Boarding
Ok, this is very MBV-sounding. There, I said it. But it rocks in this mix.
8. New Ghosts – Broadcast
“Reverb casualties” deliver driving shoegaze of the highest order.
9. Frankie Rose – Thee Only One
That’s not reverb. This is reverb – for fans of Raveonettes who don’t mind a swiped Cream chorus. Apparently she’s ex-Crystal Stilt and ex-Vivian Girl.
10. Black Tambourine – Black Car
Hadn’t come across this band much recently, but last month they were included on a host of Slumberland anniversary posts. Very nice evolution of Galaxie 500 sound.
11. Dead Leaf Echo – Half Truth
Nice dream pop from the new Truth album.
12. Beach House -Norway
Wow, I love it when music comes out as good as this. Imagine Fleet Foxes crossed with The Radio Dept. and you’re there. Off of the new record entitled Teen Dream.
13. The Distortions – Sparkle Sparkle
LA band brings beautiful spaced-out dream pop from Machines At Night.
14. Beak> – Blagdon Lake
I excitedly picked this up due to Geoff Barrow (Portishead), but unfortunately the album is a mixed bag. Dig the tension and building noise of this one.
15. Clarks – Growls Garden
Twisted, dirty electro funk with a layer of crazy noise and slamming beats. Not for the faint of heart.
16. Isolation – Swamp City
Ringing electronic anthem off the last month’s self-titled EP takes us home.
