Soundtrack2 Audiocast 32: Brave New Songs
Sparklehorse, Weekend, Sonic Youth, Mean Red Spiders, Giant Drag & more
There’s a lot of great music this week, but with the sad passing of Mark Linkous we realized we’ve never played any Sparklehorse. Our mix is bookended by two of our fave tracks.
We decided not to wade into the mighty SXSW torrent yet….but may do that for the next one. Any faves?
1. Sparklehorse – Pig
The entire track sounds like it was fed through a Danelectro. Chris first heard it while driving…three bars in and he was passing people like they were standing still.
2. The N.E.C. – Those (Guilty Pleasures)
Natural Extension Concept out of Atlanta ring out with some glorious shoegaze/shitgaze.
3. Sonic Youth – Poison Arrow
Wire, meet The Velvet Underground. I didn’t get to listen to The Eternal until recently. Much better than the NYC Flowers record from a few years back.
4. Thinking Machines – Titan
Swirling journey into the darkness with vocals reminiscent of Sebadoh. I’m sure I’m not the first to make this comparison.
5. Nikki Louder – No Disko (For You, You Silly Dancers)
Now we’re really messing with you. This is the only proper song I can find on this guitar anarchist’s Alain I’m Sorry record. Excessive perfection.
6. Weekend – Tiara (Demo)
Abrasive shoegaze anthem for the kids. Demos by this band are great.
7. Waskerley Way – Brave New Songs
Curious ethereal trashcan disorto-rock out of the UK.
8. Zabrisky – Your House On A Saturday
Italian dose of straightahead C86-style pop.
9. Beach Fossils – Time
Lazy dark reverb-filled number by a Brooklyn band.
10. Mean Red Spiders – First And Only
Chilled out groovy tune with a slight Stereolab or Ivy vibe. Different than their other stuff.
11. Giant Drag – White Baby
Very excited that they’re back with the Swan Song EP. No mind-blowing tracks here but this one’s solid. Next up – Autolux.
12. Tennis System – FS
Never would have guessed this guys were American. This drifting track comes off The Future Is Our History.
13. Silver Pines – Time Father
Imagine Galaxie 500 after a week’s sleep deprivation and you’ve got this band. Pick it up if you like Cowboy Junkies‘ edgier stuff.
14. Falling Leaves – Killer
Massively indebted to Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side Of The Moon. But hey, there’s only so many times you can listen to that album, right?
15. Mackaper – Tale Of Tales
And now leaving Earth…via Sweden. Lovely.
16. Woven Tales – Handful of Fireflies
Warm washes of synth like this make me…happy.
17. Mercury Rev – Hercules
Spiritual, epic, thought-provoking.
18. Sparklehorse – Someday I Will Treat You Good
“I left my baby on the side of the highway…” This is rock and roll. Find it on Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot.
