Soundtrack2 Ep. 76: Failure
Washed Out, M83, Girls, PacificUV, Dum Dum Girls & more
Tons of great new stuff this week. Dig in.
1. Burning God Little – Notes On Being Snowblind
Swinging track that puts a spring in your step.
2. Tahiti 80 – Defender
French electro poppers come back with a vengeance on The Past, The Present & The Possible.
3. Battles – Sweetie and Shag (featuring Kazu Makino)
Slept on their latest, but I’m catching up now. Sweet vocals courtesy of the Blonde Redhead singer and very cool disonant keys during chorus – is that a steel drum I hear?
4. M83 – Midnight City
Another new huge tune from Mr. G. Less shoegazy than his last record, but just as 80′s-influenced. Available for free download via his site.
5. Public Transport - Up All Night
Sweet, big electronic pop courtesy of Duncan Bailey. I like my instrumentals, but this tune would just soar with female vocals.
6. Washed Out – You And I
The chillwave masters return.
7. Valentin Stip – Anytime Will Do
Montreal noir minimalism, available on RCRDLBL.
8. PacificUV – I’m Here (But It’s Not Me)
Intimate and lovely. The latest track in their monthly free series.
9. Stargazer Lilies – Ahhh
Glacial shoegaze.
10. Dum Dum Girls – Coming Down
On their latest, I hear a cross between Mazzy Star and Low. This band just keeps getting better.
11. Alec’s Band – The Great Dong Of Darkness On A Motorcycle
Noise rock instrumental that transforms from ballad to bombast. And based on this band’s song titles, I’m thankful there are no lyrics.
12. Wooden Shjips – Lazy Bones
Groovy psych journey into the swamp. RCRDLBL.
13. The Jesus And Mary Chain – Supertramp
Hey, this isn’t “The Logical Song!” Brace yourself for this Munki classic with “Tomorrow Never Knows” drumming, punchy bass and a cool chorus.
14. The La’s – Failure
Someone wrote Mojo to diss The La’s. Yes, they’re overhyped because of their low output. But listen to this performance and tell me you’re not blown away.
15. Veronica Falls – Come On Over
London crew runs down some pounding indie rock.
16. Girls – Vomit
The online reviews I’ve read of their latest tune don’t describe it well. Best I can do is Led Zeppelin‘s “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, mixed with Eels that ends as a Bowie or T. Rex glam soul anthem. “Come into my heart…”
Soundtrack2 Ep. 75: Twisted Mirror
Masquer, Deerhoof, Shade, New Estate, Killing Joke & more
1. The Wedding Present – Crawl
Wistful indie pop from 1990 gets us going.
2. Killing Joke – Eighties
Blast of primal yet glammy post punk featuring the UK’s greatest screamer. Weird Science fans may recognize this from the crazy house party scene, before the motorcycle gang rides through the house.
3. Tones On Tail – Go
Former Bauhaus dudes dropped this freaky goth funk gem, then decided to form Love and Rockets.
4. Medicine – She Knows Everything
Wonderful screaming noise with ethereal crooning vocals over top.
5. Masquer – Happiness
Swedes provide some dark, romantic electro pop, available for free on their site.
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Y Control
This popped up on my player the other day. Overlooked indie noir beauty from Fever To Tell.
7. Scarlet Chives – The Horror
Track of the week! Imagine Kate Bush crossed with My Bloody Valentine, and you’ve got Scarlet Chives. Name’s a bit silly, mind you.
8. Skylight – As You Leave (2008)
Very cool stuff recently unearthed by the Boston band and uploaded to their bandcamp page. Nice murky shoegaze.
9. Shade – Get There With You
Latonka track with great vocals and drone. Reminds me of another band, but I can’t say who…
10. Daydream – Shiny Road
This Korean band love their Ride. That’s ok, we do too. Nice melody and female vocal.
11. Air Formation – Fallen Leaves
Cool, slightly dreary sonic assault.
12. New Estate – Dream Planner
Fantastic track that out-Pavements Pavement. But with a touch of shoegaze thrown in.
13. Surely I Come Quickly – The Breeze
Lo-fi from Saskatchewan? This has been kicking around for a while, but had I known they were from Saskatoon I’d have dropped it sooner. Cool French horn, or whatever that instrument is.
14. Pure X – Twisted Mirror
Reverb-drenched goover for the late late late night wind-down.
15. Sungrazer – Wild Goose
Gimme stoner rock! And make it Dutch, please. Hoping to play some more of this kind of stuff, provided it fits. Thoughts?
16. Royal Bangs – TV Tree (Deerhoof remix)
Noisy, bonkers remix of great tune from Flux Outside.
17. The Harvey Girls – Faster Peach
Hard to describe this one, but trust me it’ s great. Till next time.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 74: Unseen
Moonface, Swirlies, Younghusband, Centro-Matic, Lunch & more
1. Miracle Fortress – Tracers
New post punk tune gets the ball rolling. This track reminds me of a far cooler version of Talking Heads. Freaky breakdown too.
2. Moonface – Fast Peter
Wolf Parade guy gets his epic synth rock on.
3. For Those Who Know – Competition (Drone Control Remix)
Blissed out dream pop with great washes of guitar and heavily distorted vocals.
4. Apparat – Black Water
Producer Sascha Ring drops a slow moving dream pop beauty here.
5. 2muchachos – Magic Tanner
Glacial organ from this Russian band reminds me of some tracks from the fabulous National Parks Project.
6. Fallen Rule – Let People Not Be Your Foundation
Heart-on-sleeve rock grandeur in the Irish tradition of U2 and The Frames.
7. Starfyler 59 – Play The C Chord
A classic midtempo rock tune with a slight twang.
8. Eleanor Friedberger – My Mistakes
Trying something a bit different with this track from one half of The Fiery Furnaces. Reserve judgement until the track fully kicks in.
9. Centro-Matic – Only In My Double Mind
Texas crew brings glimmering, hopeful rock and roll with lovely harmonies. Bit of an Arcade Fire vibe.
10. Lunch – Turn Around
Remember The Replacements? Imagine them gone shoegaze…sorta.
11. Radical Dads – Walking Wires
80s-style indie pop from Brooklyn.
12. Younghusband – Carousel
Song of the week! Glorious shimmering shoegaze available from RCRDLBL.
13. Swirlies – Sound Of Sebring
Fabulous moody shoegaze from 1996′s They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons.
14. Airiel – Airtight Angels
Yes! Swirling shoegaze rock and roll. Must play more Airiel.
15. Bailterspace – Unseen
Air bass time! Killer nihilist shoegaze from the legendary Kiwi band’s Aim EP.
16. White Noise Sound – Sunset
Waiting for the second coming of Spacemen 3? Look no further.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 73: Runes
Soren Well, Austra, Highspire, Balam Acab, Appliance & more
1. Austra – Hate Crime
Funky thumping electro pop tune that gets stuck inside your head.
2. Still Corners – Cuckoo
Desolate 3 a.m. torch song outta the UK.
3. Arrange – Blinds With You
Probably the first Florida band I’ve ever featured. Just gorgeous tune for a rainy day.
4. Balam Acab – Oh Why
Heartbreaking soulful electronic swan song with lovely vocal samples.
5. Active Child – Body Heat (So Far Away)
Electronic soul soundtrack to a lost 80s film. Imagine Bon Iver with a sampler and drum machine.
6. Yo La Tengo – Autumn Sweater
The groovy indie rock classic.
7. Flavor Crystals – Church Fuzz
Midwestern band starts with a slow dirge and then breaks into mesmerizing krautrock.
8. Appliance – Return To Telemark
Motorik pscyh off last year’s epic 3-CD Re-Conditioned. Well worth getting.
9. The Secret Machines – Nowhere Again
One from the borderline space rock band’s classic Now Here Is Nowhere.
10. S.C.U.M – Amber Hands
Exciting, glammy Suede-style psychedelic rock and roll.
11. Dirty Pulp Theatre – Shining Soul
Digging this 90s style indie rock.
12. Soren Well – Honey On Fire
New JAMC-lite shoegaze tune that’s made me want to dig into some of their older stuff.
13. Highspire – Glass In My Mouth
The highlight of this week’s mix. Classic Ride-influenced shoegaze.
14. Lilys – Claire Hates Me
Such a simple riff and chords, but it’s just fantastic. “I am Kane…I’m not Abel…” Kurt really needs to get on some new stuff.
15. Burrrn – Eyes In Motion
Mod rock and roll with fantastic distorted bass. I’d kill to see this played live.
16. Iceage – White Rune
Mental punk overload. Need to play more stuff like this. Any recommendations?
