Soundtrack2 Audiocast28: Ice Age

Earthmen, Joy Formidable, Electro Group, Band Of Susans, Citay & more

Apparently yesterday was the most depressing day of the year. To help, we’ve dug into the archives a bit to dust off some old favourites and combine with some new goodies.

1.   The Earthmen – Momentum

Monstrous early 90s rock shoegaze from Australian band. I defy you not to air drum to this.

2.   Alcian Blue – Angelica Take Me Down

Pummeling soundtrack to oblivion from 2003’s  single of the same name. Don’t know if I’d want to meet this Angelica.

3.   The Joy Formidable – Greyhound In The Slips

For those who rail against nu-gaze, here’s something fresh for you. Euphoric, upbeat rock and roll. And it’s available for free download from the MySpace page. Kind of reminds me of Visqueen, but not sure why.

4.   Red Pens – Blue Lighters

Minneapolis band offers up a ear-shredding shitgaze anthem off Reasons. Fugazi crossed with the Thermals channelling The Who? Lazy reviewing aside, give us more of this, please.

5.   Electro Group – Nobody Knows

This band grooves nicely on this nice track off the Ummo Ep.

6.   Yuck – Georgia

Dream/gloomy Friday I’m In Love-style noisy pop. And off a demo, no less! Available for free download from their blog.

7.   Ceremony – Someday

Like A Place To Bury Strangers and Skywave? Connected to these bands is Ceremony. More gloomy beauty that is way to loud to no matter how high the volume is.

8.   (((S))) – Deathtrip

Looking for the missing link between Suicide and New Order? Check out the interesting Ghost record from last year.

9.   Spirit Vine – Golden

At first this sounded like the latest BRMC or Black Angels reverb/drone rock band. But keep listening – the chorus will surprise.

10.   Coltrane Motion – Twenty-Seven

Weird band. Some songs sound like this and others…well, don’t. And they’re not even Scandanavian!

11.   Band Of Susans – Ice Age

Can’t believe that we’ve never played BOS!  Classic track off The Word And The Flesh that reminds me of The Verve‘s more glacial moments: “an endless dream.”

12.   Dorias Baracca – Silence

This Danish band’s song off  The Handsome Melting Point EP will get inside your head. The riff sounds as if it was developed by Slash if he fronted Slowdive.

13.   Citay – Mirror Kisses

Okay, last bad comparison of the night – Geneva crossed with Grand Funk Railroad‘s I’m Your Captain? A bit more pastoral then what we usually play. Check out Dream Get Together when it launches on January 26

14.   Musique TLR – With The Stars

Love the space rock blues vibe on this track. I’m temped to drop Carl Sagan narration over top.

15.   Landing – Harmonies

Synths abound in the floating-in-space track off the Oceanless record.

16.   Breakfast Mountain – Log Jamm

And here are the first transmissions from a newly-discovered planet. As translated by the Portland band.
