Soundtrack2 Ep. 106: Tenderhearted

The Faux Noise, Cadence Weapon, PS I Love You, Crocodiles, No Joy & more

The essential summertime shoegaze mix? Perhaps.

1.   Alligator Indian – Our Love Was A Crime
How could it have taken this long for us to feature a post punk band from Asheville? Bucket list one step closer to completion.

2.   The John Candy – Anyway, Anywhere, Anyhow
Breathless C86 indie pop from a few years back, complete with delirious guitar riff.

3.   Mandarinaduck – Tenderhearted Destroyer
A perfect mixture of tension and soaring choruses out of the Ukraine. I won’t say anything about the band’s name.

4.   PS I Love You – Death Dreams II
This band really stretch their legs on the superb Death Dreams. If you’re free and in TO, they’re making an appearance at NXNE this Thursday.

5.   Fort Lean – Sunsick
This tune kind of got stuck in my head.

6.   Crocodiles – No Black Clouds For Dee Dee
Endless Flowers, one of the most anticipated albums in ages, finally dropped. Of all the tracks this groovy psych number stood out for me.

7.   Miniatures – Midwinter (Air)
Melbourne crew dives into some heavy shoegaze on this gem.

8.   Pink Mist – Touchdown Kid
“She gives me nothing for nothing…” Brooding intro gives way to a dark Hawaiian dancefloor.

9.   No Joy – Junior
Great shoegaze single from one of Montreal’s finest. Coming out soon on Negaverse.

10.  Cadence Weapon – Conditioning
We at S2 love hip hop, but we never thought it could fit in our mix. Of course, that’s until we heard this superb new track off Hope In Dirt City.

11.  The Faux Noise – Leave Her To Heaven
Curious mixture of beats and dream pop. “Forgive me one more day…”

12.  Autolux – Plant Life
Still mining the masterpiece that is Future Perfect.

13.  The December Sound – Truth Hearts
Boston band takes us down with drone and shoegaze.

14.  ivansxtc – Yesterday
Crooning dream pop tune from a few years back that I only recently discovered.

15.  Brother Sun, Sister Moon – All You Need
Turn off your mind…

16.  Bark Psychosis – 400 Winters
This sounds like a collaboration betweenTim Buckley and Broadcast. Gotta play more by these late 80s/ early 90s heroes.

17.  Great Northern – Low Is A Height
Speaking of defunct bands, my iPod recently served up this stunner from Turning Twilight Into Daylight.

18.  2 Hearts and Chemicals – Froid (ft. Guylaine Vivarat)
The mellow vibe rolls on with hushed French vocals and strings out of L.A.

19.  Family Band– Night Song
Closing the curtains with an eerie riff and lines like “hold me here till morning takes my eyes…”

Soundtrack2 Audiocast 43: Sunburn

Autolux, Tamaryn, Starflyer 59, Film School, No Age & more

1. No Age – Glitter

Didn’t like this one so much initially, but it grows. Distorted noises make this track.

2. Film School – Heart Full Of Pentagons

New track that sounds very New Order. Nice though.

3. Heartbeat Hotel – Fins Of A Shark

Now we’re talking. Dreamy shoegaze, available at the Toronto band’s Bandcamp.

4. The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing (Raveonettes Remix)

Summer’s in full swing with this righteous garage rock tune. Recommend you follow it with “Surfin’ Bird” on your next surf mix.

5. Party Photographers – Piano Vache

Philly band deliver some reverb ringing guitar.

6. Rancho Relaxo – Black Nectarine From The Simian Heart

Now these guys are interesting. Straight outta Norway, with lots of good songs. This one’s inspired by 90s BJM.

7. Tamaryn – The Waves

Heavy drone rock from the streets of San Francisco.

8. Swirlies – Pancake

Note to self: play way more Swirlies. Marvellous noisy midtempo shoegaze.

9. Autolux – Census

Ode to Canadian PM Stephen Harper’s showdown about data collection? Or the latest claustrophobic transmission from a long-forgotten space outpost? You decide – and check it out on Transit Transit.

10. Beat Connection – Sunburn

Groovy mood piece that seems to keep coming back. Surf Noir EP is free from their Bandcamp.

11. The CQ – Dreaming

Shoegaze of the MBV variety. Love the vocals and chorus. Props to WGWB.

12. Laboratory Noise – The Value Of Experiments

These guys are clearly Doves fans, but that’s not a bad thing if they make an epic rock tune this good.

13. Starflyer 59 – You’re Mean

Rejected for our first episode, this slacker-gaze track works itself into the mix.

14. Eternal Summers – Pure Affection

Lazy but slightly dreary tune suggests that – despite the title – summer is winding down.

15. Tracey Thorn – Kentish Town (Walls Remix)

Oddly compelling ambient remix that bubbles under with MIDI snaps, sequencer chimes and dissonance. It’s  a long way from EBTG.

Soundtrack2 Audiocast41: Processions

Autolux, The Blanket Ghost, Collider, The Boo Radleys, No Joy & more

1. Bottle Of Evil – Conversation

Dreamy Scottish indie. Feeling a bit of Doves here but not sure why.

2. Slowdive – 40 Days

Working in some more classics. We haven’t played this band since the very first episode – criminal! Timeless and lovely.

3. Anne – Summer Babies

Vocals remind me of Duncan Sheik (!) but this dream pop off their Demo is first rate.

4. The Blanket Ghost – l o o k a t t h e s t a r s

Cool off-kilter noise pop. With a name using the required words “Ghost”, “Crystal” or “Girls”, these guys are sure to make it big.

5. Autolux – Supertoys

Yes. Transit Transit is out August 3 and it looks they haven’t lost their touch over the years.

6. The Boo Radleys – Rodney King

Another neglected ST2 fave. Love this track’s distorted groove from their masterpiece Giant Steps.

7. Bloody Knives – Hands Around My Neck

Glam-gaze from those weird kids in Austin.

8. Collider – !Ex Ex!

Righteous melodic shoegaze rock and roll from the fantastic Strobos EP, available on their Bandcamp.

9. Weed Hounds – Skating Away From The Cops

C86-inspired anthem by New Yorkan band. More please.

10. Caucus – Sing (Half Dreaming)

Came across this nice pop track off the great Half Dreaming Asian shoegaze comp. Pretty good English singing for a Japanese band!

11. The Morning After Girls – Death Processions

Last year’s Alone yielded some good tunes, but loud dark arena rock and roll fans should turn this one up.

12.  Cherryblades – Everyday Is Extreme

Cross Hüsker Dü, R.E.M. and Wire and you have this 90s band.

13. Amazing Baby – Head Dress

Baroque melodic Britpop  from Brooklyn with some nice glam guitar. Better than it sounds.

14. The High Dials – Book Of The Dead

Light psych that’s hooked me since first seeing them as mainly-mod The Datsons. Off this year’s good Moon Country album.

15. No Joy – No Joy

Hard to pin this one down. Loud, distorted Archers of Loaf-indebted rock.

16. Turzi – Baltimore

Party like it’s 1993 with this Bobby Gillespie-guested big beat track. Also better than it sounds.

17. How To Destroy Angels – Parasite

You-know-who brings the broken dark noise. Been kicking this around for a while now…pick up the free EP on his site.

18. Indian Jewelry – Lost My Sight

Swirl in to the dark digital void with this pummeling trance psychedelia. And for the last time – better than it sounds.

Soundtrack2 Audiocast23: Hallucination Generation

Headlights, Autolux, Paris Angels, After The Weather, Maps & more

Carouselpsych

Our latest mix of new and old gems from the Interwebs. Very excited about the quality of stuff coming out. And it will only get better as we head into the holiday release period.

You’ll notice lots of global music and a few curveballs in this week’s mix – let us know what you think!

1.   Trailer Trash Tracies – Strangling Good Guys

Treble lovers unite! Great track out of the UK to start us off.

2.   Culkin – Glow

Coming straight outta Stockholm with some classic-sounding shoegaze.

3.   Moments Shoegaze – Maniquins

Track from a few years back that came up again recently. Off the L’Équilibriste EP but the band is Spanish – of course!

4.   Autolux – Audience No. 2

Somehow I missed this advance track off their next album Transit Transit. Months went by, and two things made me finally add it into a mix. (1) Great article about the band in Wired and (2) someone really into this kind of music hadn’t heard of them. Apparently their next album is due out in January.

5.   True Widow – Flat Black

Now this track is interesting. Seems like an amalgam of about five bands I love, many of them from this band’s home state of Texas.

6.   Headlights – I Don’t Mind At All

Their new album Wildlife is excellent. Poppy, well-written tunes with great lyrics. We need more bands like Headlights.

7.   Sundae – Verano-Invierno

Ok, I was feeling nostalgic for some breezy pop and this Spanish track fit the bill.

8.   Paris Angels – Perfume

Wow, this straight-from-vinyl track blows my mind. Apparently it’s from the Madchester days.

9.   Clinker – Hallucination Generation

Off free download Thru The Fly Machine, this oddball band delivers a solid tripped out anthem.

10.  Phoenix – Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix – Deakin’s Jam)

Speaking of anthems, AC’s take on this track is just heavenly. If I could do an entire podcast of Animal Collective music, I probably would. Actually, Animal Collective is probably working on that kind of project right now anyway.

11.  Sunshine Factory – My Sugar Cane

Off the free two-song Sugar EP, this track’s sunspot assault is brilliant.

12.  Baa rec – Deadlock

Japanese band uses a great mix of guitars and electronica to keep this track vibrant.

13.  Maps – Turning The Mind

What can I say about Maps that 100 blogs haven’t already said? I can only add: why is he fighting the shoegaze tag? This is just glorious music that shares a lot with other glorious music we play.

14.  After The Weather – It’s Too Loud

Not sure what this is, but I like it. This Montreal’s band’s By Flashing Lights And True Love album is definitely worth picking up.

15.  Starry-Eyed – Nasa

We close with some dramatic post-rock from Seoul, uncovered in one of the many great MML posts about the Electric Muse label. BTW the post-rock we play at Soundtrack2 is usually more rock than post – so don’t be afraid.
