Soundtrack2 Ep. 100: Monolith

Dead Mellotron, Airiel, Lotus Plaza, John Maus, A Place To Bury Strangers & more

We’re 100. Yay.

Now let’s get on with another mix of killer tunes.

1.  A Place To Bury Strangers – You Are The One
We start off our 100th episode with the band that has kicked off our podcasts the most. When you listen to their latest Joy Division meets JAMC jam, you’ll understand why.

2.  Christian Samuel – Jux
Great instrumental rock and roll that with a slight Hüsker Dü vibe.

3.  Abschaum – Moonlight
Hypnotic boogie music for trenchcoat wearers.

4.  Averkiou – Fuzzy Photograph
Crunching power pop off February’s The New Imperative. Love the guitar (?) noise solo.

5.  Taffy – Haah
Stirring Japanese shoegaze. Guess they couldn’t think of a good title, so a simple “Haah” fit the bill.

6.  The Wedding Present – You’re Dead
I wasn’t really feeling this initially, but it grew on me. Gedge gives us the gears at the chorus, with a bit of Mark E. Smith phrasing.

7.  Airiel – Flashlight Tag
Amazing to hear new music from this band.

8.  Grass Widow – Walking Out On Love
More classic power pop goodness, but GW’s female vocals provide a shoegaze edge.

9.  Violens – Der Microarc
Love this track’s lush 80s indie pop production that The Smiths, Kings of Convenience and The Pernice Brothers did so well.

10.  Whirr – Toss
This Pipe Dreams twee pop tune just mesmerizes.

11.  Field Mouse – Happy
If M83 sold his gear and played in a pop band, it would sound like this.

12.  Lightfoils – Sympathy Lies
Bright, soaring shoegaze pop from Texas Chicago.

13.  John Maus – No Title (Molly)
Get down with your bad self, Mr. Maus. If this is a joke, please don’t end it.

14.  Dead Mellotron – Stranger
Sucks when you sit on a killer dream pop tune so long that ANOTHER one comes out from the same band before you get to it.

15.  Vinyl Williams – Chroma Heart
Hazy anthem starts with “The end is near” and then declares “you’re in my heart.” Check out his new Ultimate World EP.

16.  Lotus Plaza – Monoliths
Lockett Pundt’s Deerhunter offshoot provides our track of the week. As much as I love the chorus, it’s schmaltzy enough to think it might end up on Grey’s Anatomy.

17.  Soul Glimpse – Fade & Breath
One of the few ambient tracks I’ve wanted to drop. Listen closely and listen loud.

18.  Irene On Edge – Time Fly
Hypnotic full kilter noise with oddly beautiful garbled voices.

19.  Mr. Gnome – The Way
Unbelievable chillwave (or is it witch house?) that is the perfect soundtrack to a waltz in another dimension.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 54: Do You Remember

Crocodiles, Sister Vanilla, Foxes In Fiction, The Horrors, Sway & more

Happy 2011! Looking backwards a bit as we kick off 2010.

Here’s to another great year of music discovery.

1.   The Asteroid #4 – Ignition Slated For Eight

Clandestine psych off of the band’s forthcoming Hail To The Clear Figurines, due next month.

2.   The Horrors – Do You Remember

Dug this one up after reading an article that they’re in the studio working on their next album. Glad to hear they’re continuing their “ongoing pursuit of all things psychedelic.”

3.   Burrrn – Song Without Words

Japanese band bring some great noise pop.

4.   Morpheme – Infection

This has a bit of a Garbage feel to it with way more haze.

5.   Velveteen – L.S.P. Wars

German band that really likes Death Cab For Cutie vocals with a dash of MBV music.

6.   Smith Westerns – Weekend

Catchy indie power pop that I just had to put on.

7.   David Cloyd – Come Out Wherever You Are

Not sure how to describe this one, but I love the vibe here.

8.   Sunshine Factory – Hey Spaceman

I discovered this LA band’s full-blown shoegaze in 2010. Here’s another great cut off Vintage Revolution, which you can name your price for here.

9.   Sway – What I Know

Typically tracks with autotune don’t get played here. But I made an exception for this shoegaze number. Love the compression on the drums.

10.  Averkiou – Sudden Death, Over Time

Surprised this band isn’t better known. Love this killer rock and roll off Throwing Sparks.

11.  Crocodiles – Sleep Forever

Reverb and drone! A gem released last year and not played here yet. Hopefully this is the last mix to be influenced by ‘2010 Best Of’ posts.

12.  Sister Vanilla – Jamcolas

Brilliant dark rock and roll from Linda Reid, youngest sister of Jim and William from Jesus and Mary Chain. Addictive with ridiculous lyrics, plus I love the way it drops out then comes back in.

13.  Echo Lake – Sunday Morning

Just lovely, distant dream pop off the great Young Silence record.

14.  Tomihira – Flutterbie

Cool folk-ish track out of San Francisco. Love the way this builds towards the end.

15.  Foxes In Fiction – School Night

Toronto’s Warren Hildebrand dropped the excellent Alberto EP at the end of December, which you can pick up free on his site. This is a sludgy dream pop marvel.
