Soundtrack2 Ep. 104: Movies Without Sound
Crocodiles, Handsome Furs, Here We Go Magic, Garbage, pacificUV & more
Things are heating up.
1. Here We Go Magic – How Do I Know
Starting with a fix of glorious twee indie pop.
2. Crocodiles – Endless Flowers
Lots of well-deserved buzz about this shoegaze garage band. Looking forward to release of Endless Flowers next month.
3. Zero Toy – Michael
Gotta love the reverb on the guitar here. Gimme L.A. indie rock!
4. Stagnant Pools – Nothing To Do
Submerged shoegaze off Real Lies.
5. Garbage – Felt
Nice shoegazey track off their latest Not Your Kind Of People. Anyone see the Foo Fighters doc and get a glimpse of Butch Vig in the studio?
6. Stay Calm – Let Me Clear My Throat
A minor epic that brings to mind S2 faves The Secret Machines.
7. 2PPM – Movies Without Sound
Sounds like a jam session at 3 a.m. in an abandoned warehouse. Their moniker stands for “two people playing music.”
8. Monoland – Alba
Classic shoegaze sound from Manouva.
9. Centro-Matic – Janitorial On Channel Fail
Full blown, emotional crunchy 90s rock a la Yo La Tengo or Guided By Voices. No idea what the lyrics are saying, but they sound profound.
10. The New Year – The Block That Doesn’t Exist
Neurotic lo-fi of the billiantly-named Newness Ends album.
11. Meat Puppets – Severed Goddess Hand
I’ve been wanting to play this Too High To Die song here for years. Enjoy the sunburnt psych funk.
12. Damien Jurado – Reel To Reel
Second track we’ve played from the sublime and soulful Maraqopa.
13. Airiel – Funerals
More stratospheric shoegaze from latest EP Kid Games.
14. Melody’s Echo Chamber – Crystalized
Imagine Rachel Goswell fronting Tame Impala and you’ve got our track of the week.
15. pacificUV – Be My Only Shallow Love (remix)
Prolific band drop more shoegaze and beats.
16. Ladyhawke – Black, White and Blue (All Saints basement session)
Nice groovy pop track with bouncy chorus.
17. School Of Seven Bells – When You Sing
Lose yourself in this monster Ghost Story track.
18. Handsome Furs – Dead + Rural
Chrome Waves tells me this Wolf Parade spinoff has called it a day. Here’s a fitting farwell. On a related note, it appears that Dan Boeckner has a new band with Britt Daniel of Spoon and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 74: Unseen
Moonface, Swirlies, Younghusband, Centro-Matic, Lunch & more
1. Miracle Fortress – Tracers
New post punk tune gets the ball rolling. This track reminds me of a far cooler version of Talking Heads. Freaky breakdown too.
2. Moonface – Fast Peter
Wolf Parade guy gets his epic synth rock on.
3. For Those Who Know – Competition (Drone Control Remix)
Blissed out dream pop with great washes of guitar and heavily distorted vocals.
4. Apparat – Black Water
Producer Sascha Ring drops a slow moving dream pop beauty here.
5. 2muchachos – Magic Tanner
Glacial organ from this Russian band reminds me of some tracks from the fabulous National Parks Project.
6. Fallen Rule – Let People Not Be Your Foundation
Heart-on-sleeve rock grandeur in the Irish tradition of U2 and The Frames.
7. Starfyler 59 – Play The C Chord
A classic midtempo rock tune with a slight twang.
8. Eleanor Friedberger – My Mistakes
Trying something a bit different with this track from one half of The Fiery Furnaces. Reserve judgement until the track fully kicks in.
9. Centro-Matic – Only In My Double Mind
Texas crew brings glimmering, hopeful rock and roll with lovely harmonies. Bit of an Arcade Fire vibe.
10. Lunch – Turn Around
Remember The Replacements? Imagine them gone shoegaze…sorta.
11. Radical Dads – Walking Wires
80s-style indie pop from Brooklyn.
12. Younghusband – Carousel
Song of the week! Glorious shimmering shoegaze available from RCRDLBL.
13. Swirlies – Sound Of Sebring
Fabulous moody shoegaze from 1996’s They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons.
14. Airiel – Airtight Angels
Yes! Swirling shoegaze rock and roll. Must play more Airiel.
15. Bailterspace – Unseen
Air bass time! Killer nihilist shoegaze from the legendary Kiwi band’s Aim EP.
16. White Noise Sound – Sunset
Waiting for the second coming of Spacemen 3? Look no further.
