Soundtrack2 Ep. 48: You Faded
Love As Laughter, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Guitaro, Secret Knives, Matthew Dear & more
We’re rocking out this week.
1. The Darkside – Guitar Voodoo
1990 psychedelic blues masterpiece from Spacemen 3‘s Pete “Bassman” Bain.
2. Constantines – Hyacinth Blues
“Under suspicion!” Urgent, bluesy distorted rock and roll from Toronto band.
3. Awesome Color – Transparent
Do you wanna rock? Dirty, Stooges-inspired rock and roll that also brings to mind Golden Earring’s “Radar Love.” Not sure how this made it on here, actually.
4. Chavez – You Faded
Picked this one up at a garage sale. Love the GBV 90s riff rock.
5. Love As Laughter – Stakes Avenue
After a while off, this band is back with new song “Monique.” That didn’t work for this mix so here’s one off Destination 2000. Try not to be distracted by the similarities with Beastie Boys‘ “Sabotage.”
6. Working For A Nuclear Free City – Low
This band is fantastic, full stop. This one’s the late night soundtrack for when you’re feeling sinister. Check out their album Jojo Burger Tempest from a few months back.
7. Disco Doom – White Gun Cold Jet
Anthemic, falsetto indie power pop that sounds like a cross between Yo La Tengo and Grandaddy. And they’re Swiss!
8. Apple Orchard – She Knows
This Filipino indie pop band obviously cherishes their indie pop collection, particularly The Apples in Stereo.
9. Three Month Sunset – Hey Rose
Great reverb-drenched melodic shoegaze.
10. Weekend – Coma Summer
I’ve been wanting to play this for weeks! Epic, six-and-a-half minute journey with washes of guitar and noise used to great effect.
11. Congregation – Join In
Classic late 80s/early 90s Anglo indie pop.
12. Guitaro – Plastic Bags
A bit of Floyd here, but their latest JJ’s Crystal Palace is brilliant. Check out how this track’s dirge dream pop gives way to some intense, black-clad rock and roll.
13. Lilys – Tone Bender
In The Presence Of Nothing classic by one of S2′s fave bands. Their sound evolved from this MBV phase.
14. A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Drink Drank Drunk
Delightful bit of sunny shoegaze off new album Autumn, Again.
15. Matthew Dear – Innh Dahh
Floating-in-space dream pop with dreary, beautiful vocals. Find it on new album Black City.
16. Ten Million Lights – Still Point
Portland does it again. Interesting mix of hip hop beats with mellow pop. Big Massive Attack finale.
17. Secret Knives – Black Hole
To me, this is a perfect mellow electronic going out tune. But to this New Zealand band, who’s giving away their debut album, it’s the leadoff track.
