1.   This Love Is Deadly – Sweet Dependency
Starting things off with adrenaline-fuelled distorted glammy rock and roll with a 90s bent. Their self-titled new album is out and it’s solid.

2.   Highlands – Railroad
Love the intro/chorus of this drone-y footstomper.

3.   Constantines – Young Lions
A stunner from the Canadian band’s excellent Shine A Light album.

4.   The Megaphonic Thrift – Queen Of Noise
Another excellent new album release that makes me think it’s 1995 all over again. Or 1988, if you dig this Sonic Youth homage.

5.   Presents For Sally – We Always Smile Sweeter
Driving mini-anthem from the UK.

6.   The Sunshine Factory – Can’t Be Found (Falling Down)
You know when a song’s so good you’re sure you heard it somewhere before? When that ringing guitar kicks in on this track, you’ll know what I mean.

7.   Go For Gold – A Way Of Changing
Not my usual thing, but the harmonies used by this Danish band during the choruses hit the spot.

8.   Odio Paris – Big Business Monkey
Another dark rocker from this excellent Spanish band.

9.   Mentalease – Sunday
Tidal psychedelic shoegaze from…Des Moines.

10.  Thee Heavenly Music Association – Angelic Disorder
The Exile In Guyville Liz Phair vibe grabbed me right away. But this goes deeper and trippier.

11.  M A Y Г L E Y – СТАНЬ СЛАБЕЙ
Been sitting on this brooding dark Russian chillwave for a while. Apparently this is translated as “become weaker.”

12.  The Golden Filter – Age Of Consent
Interesting stripped down take on the classic New Order tune, courtesy of Mojo. Pretty cool that the tune still works minus the original’s famous bassline.

13.  Keith Canisius – Save The Sharks
Could I finally be ‘getting’ Keith Canisius? A couple of his tracks have gotten my attention recently. There’s a beautiful, classic pop song quietly hiding here.

14.  Matthew Dear – Headcage
I snapped up this EP shortly after it came out because MD tracks are always worth a listen. Interesting how his sound continues to evolve. This track sounds like it could have come out on My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

15.  Active Child – Johnny Belinda (White Arrows remix)
Cut-up samples mixed with falsetto vocals lends this tune a dramatic aura. Till next time.

39 musicians + 13 filmmakers + 13 parks = National Parks Project

Living in Canada is pretty sweet.

Not only do we have the National Film Board - whose films inspired Boards of Canada - but we get funding for great projects like The National Parks Project.

What is it? Some of Canada’s greatest music acts “created and recorded” music in Canada’s most beautiful national parks. The music was captured and incorporated into thirteen films by top filmmakers.

Artists include Soundtrack2 faves such as:

The films will be released next month. To whet our appetite, NPP has released this phenomenal trailer that demonstrates what the project’s all about.

More info on NPP (including loads more musicians who participated) can be found here. Can’t wait until March 19!

Soundtrack2 Ep. 48: You Faded

Love As Laughter, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Guitaro, Secret Knives, Matthew Dear & more

We’re rocking out this week.

1.   The Darkside – Guitar Voodoo

1990 psychedelic blues masterpiece from Spacemen 3‘s Pete “Bassman” Bain.

2.   Constantines – Hyacinth Blues

“Under suspicion!” Urgent, bluesy distorted rock and roll from Toronto band.

3.   Awesome Color – Transparent

Do you wanna rock? Dirty, Stooges-inspired rock and roll that also brings to mind Golden Earring’s “Radar Love.” Not sure how this made it on here, actually.

4.   Chavez – You Faded

Picked this one up at a garage sale. Love the GBV 90s riff rock.

5.   Love As Laughter – Stakes Avenue

After a while off, this band is back with new song “Monique.” That didn’t work for this mix so here’s one off Destination 2000. Try not to be distracted by the similarities with Beastie Boys‘ “Sabotage.”

6.   Working For A Nuclear Free City – Low

This band is fantastic, full stop. This one’s the late night soundtrack for when you’re feeling sinister. Check out their album Jojo Burger Tempest from a few months back.

7.   Disco Doom – White Gun Cold Jet

Anthemic, falsetto indie power pop that sounds like a cross between Yo La Tengo and Grandaddy. And they’re Swiss!

8.   Apple Orchard – She Knows

This Filipino indie pop band obviously cherishes their indie pop collection, particularly The Apples in Stereo.

9.   Three Month Sunset – Hey Rose

Great reverb-drenched melodic shoegaze.

10.  Weekend – Coma Summer

I’ve been wanting to play this for weeks! Epic, six-and-a-half minute journey with washes of guitar and noise used to great effect.

11.  Congregation – Join In

Classic late 80s/early 90s Anglo indie pop.

12.  Guitaro – Plastic Bags

A bit of Floyd here, but their latest JJ’s Crystal Palace is brilliant. Check out how this track’s dirge dream pop gives way to some intense, black-clad rock and roll.

13.  Lilys – Tone Bender

In The Presence Of Nothing classic by one of S2′s fave bands. Their sound evolved from this MBV phase.

14.  A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Drink Drank Drunk

Delightful bit of sunny shoegaze off new album Autumn, Again.

15.  Matthew Dear – Innh Dahh

Floating-in-space dream pop with dreary, beautiful vocals. Find it on new album Black City.

16.  Ten Million Lights – Still Point

Portland does it again. Interesting mix of hip hop beats with mellow pop. Big Massive Attack finale.

17.  Secret Knives – Black Hole

To me, this is a perfect mellow electronic going out tune. But to this New Zealand band, who’s giving away their debut album, it’s the leadoff track.
