Soundtrack2 Ep. 94: Psych Meltdown
Trailer Trash Tracys, White Cloud, Porcelain Rift, Loop, Screen Vinyl Image & more
Get your psych on.
1. Star Horse – Stranger
Delightful Stockholm shoegaze.
2. Dråpe – We Want The World
Great band. Yearning, dramatic stuff.
3. Hundir La Flota – Autopista
Madrid Motorik rock and roll with woozy bass.
4. The Raveonettes – Rebel Invasion
This newly-released Rarities track reminds me of some other great Whip It On tunes.
5. Screen Vinyl Image – Station 4
Nearly five minutes of SVI’s take on New Order meets The Jesus and Mary Chain. Pick it up exclusively on the 200,000 Gazes compilation.
6. Rangers – Conversations On The Jet Stream
Very hard to describe this one…space age slacker pop?
7. Porcelain Raft – Put Me To Sleep
“Would you do something for me…?” Huge song for fans of Engineers.
8. The Asteroid Shop – Planetary
Austin band slows it down with some groovy dream pop.
9. Trailer Trash Tracys – Candy Girl
Like a lot of tunes from their newest album Ester, but this reverb-drenched torch song is a gem.
10. Doctors – A Is For
Rainy day anthem out of the Pacific Northwest.
11. Cloud Nothings – No Future/No Past
Black clouds darken the sky. Fantastic!
12. Demonic Death Judge – Stick That In Your Pipe And Smoke It
Bring on the Finnish psych. If you dig Robin Trower, pick up this one from The Descent.
13. Atlantic Drop – Dead Souls
Love the 70s progressive bluesy psych. Lush this ain’t.
14. Parton Kooper Planetarium – Voyager
Lots of great American psych bands in this part of the podcast. Love the drums and organ here.
15. Haunted Leather – Sun It Shines
More trippy 70s-style psych.
16. Loop – I’ll Take You There
See how nicely the seminal 90s drone band fits here? Find it on The World In Your Eyes.
17. Røsenkøpf – Troth
Eastern-influenced rock and roll monster.
18. White Cloud – I Know It
Hailing from the mighty psych hotbed of San Francisco, this band gives S2 faves Tame Impala a run for their money. Track of the week, even if it’s from last year.
19. Karl O’Connor – Here And Now (English version)
Dance tune that should have been included in the Space Is the Place movie. Apparently Karl is more commonly known as Regis.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 69: Feels Like Flying
SPC ECO, The Vaccines, Galaxie 500, Capsula, Main & more
1. Craft Spells – From The Morning Heat
Kicking things off with some jangly romantic pop.
2. Seapony – Blue Star
Though we recently played another track by this band, we couldn’t resist the sleepy gauze pop on this track. RCRDLBL made it available here.
3. Kids On A Crime Spree – Sweet Tooth
Surf/power pop from Oakland band. Another from RCRDLBL.
4. The History Of Apple Pie – Tug
UK band brings some dark power pop. RCRDLBL is on fire recently.
5. The Vaccines – If You Wanna
Daytrotter provides a sweet reverbed rock and roll track that sends singer Justin Young into hoarse territory.
6. Prismo Perfect – TV Dream
Noisy post punk from France.
7. Capsula – Under The Woods
Dark, urgent shoegaze with an air of menace. Check out their fantastic In The Land Of Silver Souls record.
8. Pursesnatchers – Baseball On The Radio
Krautrock-influenced rock and roll.
9. 13 Engines – Bred In The Bone
This track by Canadian 90s heroes starts as a creeper and then explodes.
10. White Lies – Is Love
With singing inspired by John Cale or Julian Cope, this tracks just rocks. And props on a great website.
11. Marnie Stern – Transformer
Difficult to describe this one – full-on sensory overload in two minutes? Would love to see this played live.
12. Main – Feed The Collapse
Classic by former members of Loop. Minimal and spooky.
13. Elbow – Fallen Angel
Beautiful, ethereal rocker off Cast Of Thousands.
14. SPC ECO – Feels Like Flying
Speaking of ethereal…brand new stunner from SPC ECO’s Big Fat World EP. Get it here.
15. Galaxie 500 – Another Day
Legends channel Velvet Underground on this gem from On Fire.
16. Soft Crest – Young Blood
Just fantastic new track from this LA band. Inspirational.
17. Cortney Tidwell – Oslo
Nashville represents on Daytrotter with this wistful dream pop tune. Don’t tell Chris, but it makes me reflect fondly on The Sundays.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 60: Revert Time
The Joy Formidable, Loop, Asobi Seksu, Firesuite, Youngteam & more
1. Heavy Ghost– Lucid
70s crime show bass kicks thing off, combined with washes of shoegaze-y guitar. Turn it up LOUD. Me likey!
2. Drop – Drone 1
90s UK band does quiet/loud just a shade or two darker than Ride. You can pick this up on 1992’s Within And Beyond.
3. Loop – Collision
Now we’ve just entered your crazy older brother’s Camaro. And he’s got that funny look in his eye again. This comes up on the car stereo, and he hits the gas.
4. Sex Church – Mistaken
Blistering 7+ minute sonic devastation. Complete rock and roll overload. Wish the rest of this BC band’s latest EP was like this.
5. Youngteam – Northern Star
If there was a sh0egaze version of Led Zep‘s “When The Levee Breaks,” this would be it.
6. Curve – Horror Head
Curve has always had their own sound: a kind of ethereal shoegaze with guitars and circa 1990 drum machine. And if you like this, you’ll LOVE SPC ECO, produced by Dean. Actually I may prefer SPC ECO…gasp!
7. Heaven – Colors In The Whites Of Your Eyes
Broolkyn spacey pop.
8. First Love, Last Rites – Slow Wind
Sweet noisy pop in the TPOBPAH vein, with a technicolor shoegaze chorus.
9. Ports Of Call – Fadophobia
Can’t put my finger who they sound like on this track…Kitchens of Distinction maybe?
10. Cranes – Reverie
Groovy America-like strumming at the beginning gives way to noisy electric guitars. Can’t believe this band is English – could have sworn the singer sounded Japanese!
11. The Joy Formidable – The Greatest Light Is The Greatest Shade
Looks like the UK is owning this week’s mix, and TJF is the North Wales representative. This comes from their excellent latest record, The Big Roar.
12. Asobi Seksu – Coming Up
Another new one from this band’s Flourescence record. Struck by how weird is that AS now sounds like S2 faves Young Galaxy.
13. Firesuite – Amity
Transcendant space rock from yet another UK band, with beautiful harmonies that build towards a dramatic ending.
14. Folie Adieu – Casino
Kansas representing on this great drone/dream pop tune.
15. The Delfields – Julie Jupiter
Beautiful dream pop with heavy guitars that Luna fans would dig. And the great choruses drive towards a fantastic dash to the finish line. This came out last year, but can’t find much band info on the Web.
16. 36 – Revert Time
Haunting, trippy tune based around a single chord that increases in volume as the vocalist endorses defying physics. Goodnight, wherever you are.
