Soundtrack2 Ep. 104: Movies Without Sound
Crocodiles, Handsome Furs, Here We Go Magic, Garbage, pacificUV & more
Things are heating up.
1. Here We Go Magic – How Do I Know
Starting with a fix of glorious twee indie pop.
2. Crocodiles – Endless Flowers
Lots of well-deserved buzz about this shoegaze garage band. Looking forward to release of Endless Flowers next month.
3. Zero Toy – Michael
Gotta love the reverb on the guitar here. Gimme L.A. indie rock!
4. Stagnant Pools – Nothing To Do
Submerged shoegaze off Real Lies.
5. Garbage – Felt
Nice shoegazey track off their latest Not Your Kind Of People. Anyone see the Foo Fighters doc and get a glimpse of Butch Vig in the studio?
6. Stay Calm – Let Me Clear My Throat
A minor epic that brings to mind S2 faves The Secret Machines.
7. 2PPM – Movies Without Sound
Sounds like a jam session at 3 a.m. in an abandoned warehouse. Their moniker stands for “two people playing music.”
8. Monoland – Alba
Classic shoegaze sound from Manouva.
9. Centro-Matic – Janitorial On Channel Fail
Full blown, emotional crunchy 90s rock a la Yo La Tengo or Guided By Voices. No idea what the lyrics are saying, but they sound profound.
10. The New Year – The Block That Doesn’t Exist
Neurotic lo-fi of the billiantly-named Newness Ends album.
11. Meat Puppets – Severed Goddess Hand
I’ve been wanting to play this Too High To Die song here for years. Enjoy the sunburnt psych funk.
12. Damien Jurado – Reel To Reel
Second track we’ve played from the sublime and soulful Maraqopa.
13. Airiel – Funerals
More stratospheric shoegaze from latest EP Kid Games.
14. Melody’s Echo Chamber – Crystalized
Imagine Rachel Goswell fronting Tame Impala and you’ve got our track of the week.
15. pacificUV – Be My Only Shallow Love (remix)
Prolific band drop more shoegaze and beats.
16. Ladyhawke – Black, White and Blue (All Saints basement session)
Nice groovy pop track with bouncy chorus.
17. School Of Seven Bells – When You Sing
Lose yourself in this monster Ghost Story track.
18. Handsome Furs – Dead + Rural
Chrome Waves tells me this Wolf Parade spinoff has called it a day. Here’s a fitting farwell. On a related note, it appears that Dan Boeckner has a new band with Britt Daniel of Spoon and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks.
Soundtrack2 Ep. 90: Invisible
Maribel, Screen Vinyl Image, School of Seven Bells, The Chambermaids, Deardarkhead & more
1. School of Seven Bells – The Night
New sublime electronic dream pop that should make you very happy. Look for it on Ghoststory.
2. Pterodactyl – School Glue
Noise rock that seemed to go perfectly with the previous tune. Now I’m not so sure…
3. MaoTzu – Case Closed
Freak frenzied folk psychedelia out of Chicago.
4. Yakari – Higher Sphere
Arctic indie rock that brings to mind a more-blunted Archers of Loaf. Also – I think this is the first time we’ve featured a Swiss band on S2!
5. The Faux Noise – Oh Father (Hymn)
Wonderful head-nodding shoegaze.
6. Earthquake Party – Pretty Little Hand
Walls of garage guitar meet guy/girl pop harmonies.
7. The Chambermaids – Whirlpool
This is very special. Imagine chords and vocals from Pink Floyd crossed with the Fleet Foxes sound.
8. Deardarkhead – Invisible
Recently released on Captured Tracks’ new Oceanside: 1991-1993, this is just one of several killer tracks from this obscure shoegaze band.
9. Maribel – Jezebel Jive
My ears perked up at this new track from their second album Reveries due out in 2012. It’s hard to describe their sound, so according them: “Maribel play dark, slow-burning dream-pop drawing on a wide range of influences from film noir to J Dilla.”
10. Screen Vinyl Image – Revival
Rip-roaring drone garage from the might SVI. Check out their latest album Strange Behavior.
11. Ufesas – Part Of The Night
Uruguay band takes us on a journey deep into psych country. So glad this tune is on the mix. It’s intense.
12. Coolrunnings – Rusk
Where the hell did this come from? Low chant-like vocals interrupted by explosions of psych guitar.
13. Nova Drones – Leech
Now we’re back to what sounds like an actual tune!
14. Tashaki Miyaki – Somethin’ Is Better Than Nothin’
Can’t tell if this is a The Jesus And Mary Chain cover or a wonderful homage.
15. All In The Golden Afternoon – All In The Golden Afternoon
Trippy tune to soundtrack a bad dream sequence.
16. Galaxie 500 – Tugboat
Stone cold classic from Today.
17. Mystic Chords Of Memory – We Could Send Letters
Aztec Camera track given the full blown hippy cinema treatment by a now-defunct band composed of members of The Aislers Set, The Tyde and Beachwood Sparks.
Soundtrack2 Audiocast38: Gimme Swelter
School of Seven Bells, Sennen, Sea Exchange, Ursula Minor, Windsor For The Derby & more
It’s hot. Real hot. Need to be cooled down or get the blood boling?
Listen & enjoy.
1. Windsor For The Derby – Queen Of The Sun
Lovely dream pop from upcoming album Against Love.
2. Stripmall Architecture – Pripyat
Can’t get this one out of my head. Download the elements to remix this yourself.
3. Phillip Eno – Your Name
More fuzzed out dream pop. The band has made this song and a lot more available for free download on their site.
4. Flavor Crystals – Ambergris
A bit of Yo La Tengo vibe here. One of many great tracks on the Minneapolis band’s Ambergris album.
5. Alcoholic Faith Mission – My Eyes To See
Nervy Danish band deliver passionate indie pop.
6. Nikoo – Marquee
Been listening to this hard-to-describe band for a while. Their self-titled album is very good.
7. Sea Exchange – Schemes
Bit of shoegaze indie pop here. Both of their EPs are great and available for free.
8. Dropping Honey – Foveaux
Watch out! This track by this Sydney, Australia band starts funky but gets huge and noisy.
9. Sennen – Can’t See The Light
Not a huge fan of this band, but their most recent tracks are less murky. This dark shoegaze track is off last month’s Age of Denial.
10. Garageland – Never Gonna Come Round Here Again
Flying Nun band brings some driving rock and roll off 1996’s Last Exit To Garageland.
11. Ursula Minor – Westphalia
Killer Krautrock. Be sure to check out this Glasgow band’s varied Laudanum album.
12. Band In Heaven – Tunnel Into Your Dreams
Ambient rock off their free demos bandcamp page.
13. School of Seven Bells – Babelonia
Disconnect From Desire won’t be out until July, but this is more than enough to keep me satisfied.
14. Swathes – Very White
Noisy, dense industrial/shoegaze builder.
15. K-X-P – 18 Hours (Of Love)
According to XLR8R, this band provides “Spaced-out Krautrock-meets-drummy-disco dance party.” Can’t find any info online so here’s a good Altsounds post.
