Soundtrack2 Ep. 94: Psych Meltdown

Trailer Trash Tracys, White Cloud, Porcelain Rift, Loop, Screen Vinyl Image & more

Get your psych on.

1.   Star Horse – Stranger
Delightful Stockholm shoegaze.

2.  Dråpe – We Want The World
Great band. Yearning, dramatic stuff.

3.   Hundir La Flota – Autopista
Madrid Motorik rock and roll with woozy bass.

4.   The Raveonettes – Rebel Invasion
This newly-released Rarities track reminds me of some other great Whip It On tunes.

5.   Screen Vinyl Image – Station 4
Nearly five minutes of SVI’s take on New Order meets The Jesus and Mary Chain. Pick it up exclusively on the 200,000 Gazes compilation.

6.   Rangers – Conversations On The Jet Stream
Very hard to describe this one…space age slacker pop?

7.   Porcelain Raft – Put Me To Sleep
“Would you do something for me…?” Huge song for fans of Engineers.

8.   The Asteroid Shop – Planetary
Austin band slows it down with some groovy dream pop.

9.   Trailer Trash Tracys – Candy Girl
Like a lot of tunes from their newest album Ester, but this reverb-drenched torch song is a gem.

10.  Doctors – A Is For
Rainy day anthem out of the Pacific Northwest.

11.  Cloud Nothings – No Future/No Past
Black clouds darken the sky. Fantastic!

12.  Demonic Death Judge – Stick That In Your Pipe And Smoke It
Bring on the Finnish psych. If you dig Robin Trower, pick up this one from The Descent.

13.  Atlantic Drop – Dead Souls
Love the 70s progressive bluesy psych. Lush this ain’t.

14.  Parton Kooper Planetarium – Voyager
Lots of great American psych bands in this part of the podcast. Love the drums and organ here.

15.  Haunted Leather – Sun It Shines
More trippy 70s-style psych.

16.  Loop – I’ll Take You There
See how nicely the seminal 90s drone band fits here? Find it on The World In Your Eyes.

17.  Røsenkøpf – Troth
Eastern-influenced rock and roll monster.

18.  White Cloud – I Know It
Hailing from the mighty psych hotbed of San Francisco, this band gives S2 faves Tame Impala a run for their money. Track of the week, even if it’s from last year.

19.  Karl O’Connor – Here And Now (English version)
Dance tune that should have been included in the Space Is the Place movie. Apparently Karl is more commonly known as Regis.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 90: Invisible

Maribel, Screen Vinyl Image, School of Seven Bells, The Chambermaids, Deardarkhead & more

1.   School of Seven Bells – The Night
New sublime electronic dream pop that should make you very happy. Look for it on Ghoststory.

2.   Pterodactyl – School Glue
Noise rock that seemed to go perfectly with the previous tune.  Now I’m not so sure…

3.   MaoTzu – Case Closed
Freak frenzied folk psychedelia out of Chicago.

4.   Yakari – Higher Sphere
Arctic indie rock that brings to mind a more-blunted Archers of Loaf. Also – I think this is the first time we’ve featured a Swiss band on S2!

5.   The Faux Noise – Oh Father (Hymn)
Wonderful head-nodding shoegaze.

6.   Earthquake Party – Pretty Little Hand
Walls of garage guitar meet guy/girl pop harmonies.

7.   The Chambermaids – Whirlpool
This is very special. Imagine chords and vocals from Pink Floyd crossed with the Fleet Foxes sound.

8.   Deardarkhead – Invisible
Recently released on Captured Tracks’ new Oceanside: 1991-1993, this is just one of several killer tracks from this obscure shoegaze band.

9.   Maribel – Jezebel Jive
My ears perked up at this new track from their second album Reveries due out in 2012. It’s hard to describe their sound, so according them: “Maribel play dark, slow-burning dream-pop drawing on a wide range of influences from film noir to J Dilla.”

10.  Screen Vinyl Image – Revival
Rip-roaring drone garage from the might SVI. Check out their latest album Strange Behavior.

11.  Ufesas – Part Of The Night
Uruguay band takes us on a journey deep into psych country. So glad this tune is on the mix. It’s intense.

12.  Coolrunnings – Rusk
Where the hell did this come from? Low chant-like vocals interrupted by explosions of psych guitar.

13.  Nova Drones – Leech
Now we’re back to what sounds like an actual tune!

14.  Tashaki Miyaki – Somethin’ Is Better Than Nothin’
Can’t tell if this is a The Jesus And Mary Chain cover or a wonderful homage.

15.  All In The Golden Afternoon – All In The Golden Afternoon
Trippy tune to soundtrack a bad dream sequence.

16.  Galaxie 500 – Tugboat
Stone cold classic from Today.

17.  Mystic Chords Of Memory – We Could Send Letters
Aztec Camera track given the full blown hippy cinema treatment by a now-defunct band composed of members of The Aislers Set, The Tyde and Beachwood Sparks.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 68: Our Ritual

Screen Vinyl Image, Giant Drag, //orangenoise, Washed Out, John Maus & more

1.   Jesse Ruins – Dream Analysis

Murky electronic pop outta Japan.

2.   Screen Vinyl Image – Tomorrow Is Too Far

Love the dark, dreamy glamour in this one off the split 7″ with Rude 66.

3.   Niva – Dizzyeyes

Lovely modulated goodness from Feverish Dreams.

4.   John Maus – Believer

This guy’s all over the music blogs, and it’s for good reason. His last album’s fantastic, and here’s one off next month’s We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves.

5.   Washed Out – Eyes Be Closed

Gorilla vs. Bear posted this great ambient chillwave track from new album Within and Without. Coming out in July, this track kinda reminds me of the 80s.

6.   //orangenoise – Trust (Alien Panda Jury‘s Reprise)

Karachi bands converge for this violin-heavy head trip.

7.   SECRETWARS – Pregnant California Wives

Waves of delicious distortion from Mexico City.

8.   Jace Lasek, Olga Goreas & Shadrach Kabango – Take Two Last Night and Call Me in the Morning – NWT

What do you get when you send rapper Shad and the Besnard Lakes into the wilderness for the National Parks Project? This drifting yet menacing track.

9.   Should – Broken

Rainy day dream pop from their new Like A Fire Without Sound. Fans of The Radio Dept. will dig this.

10.  Minks – Our Ritual

Slightly dreary but gorgeous dream pop off By The Hedge. Pick it up when you have a chance.

11.  gold-bears – Record Store

This week’s party jam courtesy of Atlanta crew with a love of Husker Du and Superchunk.

12.  Samideani – Do You Remember

Nice high energy three-chord garage pop from Italy. Real Vaselines vibe on the singing.

13.  Daylight’s For The Birds – For Now

Now we’re entering my archives. 2007’s Trouble Everywhere had some gems, and this is one of ’em.

14.  Giant Drag – This Isn’t It

In the mid-2000’s, a loud band with a fantastic female vocalist dropped a great record and then went silent for years. Nope, I’m not talking about Autolux. We last featured Annie & Micah on our very first podcast, and their site says Giant Drag has completed their second album. Fingers crossed we’ll hear it soon!

15.  My Bloody Valentine – Honey Power

Nostalgia required me to drop this mighty one off Loveless. Don’t know whether I love the rocking part or the chilled part more. You?

16.  Blind Mr. Jones – Delores

Shoegaze flute anthem from 1992’s Crazy Jazz.

17.  Mystery Machine – Ride

Unsung Vancouver heroes close with a Sonic Youth-indebted stunner from 1992’s Glazed.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 46: New Visions

Engineers, Tammar, Serena Maneesh, Charlatans, Deerhunter & more

This week’s audiocast could read like a Best Of Soundtrack2 compilation. Lots of great new stuff!

1. 2:54 – Creeping

UK band kicks us off with some moody post punk.

2.   Victorie & Hyde – Black Leather Jacket (Demo)

JAMC garage evolves into stratospheric dual guitar assault.

3. The Blue Velvets – Bring Me Down

Now known as Dead Rabbits, the ghosts of Spacemen 3 haunt this track.

4.   Tammar – Arrows Underwater

Love this psych track. Sounds like The La’s Lee Mavers on a bad trip. Transcend!

5.   Serena Maneesh – O.J.W.S.W.T.T.O (Stereolab remix)

Electropop treatment by legendary French band that works! Also possibly the first (and last?) track to appear on Soundtrack2 featuring a flute.

6. The Charlatans – Love Is Ending

90’s vets storm back with this new mod-pscyh tune. On first listen I thought it was an outtake to Some Friendly.

7. Deerhunter – Memory Boy

Picked up Halcyon Digest yet? It’s good but different to earlier stuff – definitely an evolution for them. This one’s closest to the stuff we play.

8. The High Violets – Ciné

Off their new album of the same name, I love this blast of stare-at-the-sun shoegaze.

9. Brother Kite – Young Pioneer

Dream pop from new album Isolation.

10. Engineers – Press Rewind

Great melodies, fantastic singing and production. Yes, it’s another Engineers album. Ulrich Schnauss even plays on In Praise Of More. Will this be their breakout record?

11. The Radio Dept. – The New Improvised Hypocrisy

More utter perfection, available for free via their website.

12. Screen Vinyl Image – New Visions

Familiar yet fresh, sun-is-rising-and-the-world-will-be-better tune.

13. Yume Bitsu – Sharp, Twisted

Guided By Voices reunited recently to play a “classic lineup” show, but this track could be from their comeback album.

14. The Black Angels – Phosphene Dream

“Our president was dead to us. Hallelujah.” Great lyrics over intense psych off  their latest album. If they come to your town, make sure you see them live. Mindblowing.

15. Maserati – Pyramid of the Sun

Imagine Eye Of The Tiger as done by Trans Am. Blistering.

16. Seeland – Black Dot (The Horrors‘ Tom Furse Remix)

Dude from the Horrors takes Seeland to a dark, electronic place.
