Burning up, then fading away…

1.   Spacemen 3 – Starship
How the blues should’ve turned out – from the 2007 rarities album of the same name.

2.   Darker My Love – Blue Day
Shredding glam garage rock and roll.

3.   Verma – Salted Earth
Imagine “Radar Love” played by a bunch of  motorik-obsessed psych heads.

4.   Outrageous Cherry – Girl You Have Magic Inside You
’67 psychedelia re-incarnated.

5.   Thee Oh Sees – The Dream
Slightly abrasive, yet stellar ringing garage.

6.   Al Lover – Black Magick Starter Jacket
Killer throbbing psych drone anthem from Satanic Tambourine. Almost asked how I had never heard of him before, but then I remembered his Beefheart tribute. This is way better.

7.   Girl Loves Distortion – Psychic Raygun
Been wanting to play this one for ages…yes.

8.   Vinyl Williams – Higher Worlds
Nice, slightly off-kilter groove here.

9.   Boris – Spoon
You had me at the intro. This is what shoegaze is all about. Thrilling track from upcoming record New Album, due Nov. 25.

10.  Lush – The Invisible Man
This band’s never been among my fave early shoegaze bands, but they’re definitely under-represented on S2.

11.  SPC ECO – Fading Out
This band’s done a lot of great stuff, but I like how this new track off  You Tell Me really channels the Cocteaus.

12.  Blouse – Time Travel
Cool Broadcast-style dark electro popper. Wish I knew what that classic synth sound was from…

13.  Eight And A Half – Scissors (Tokimonsta remix)

Broken Social Scene member’s tune gets the glitchy electronic treatment. Pick ’em both up at the link above.

14.  The Blanche Hudson Weekend – Screen Test
Can’t say I love everything on their new album You Always Loved Violence. But this lonely desert ballad’s drone drew me in.

15.  Icarus Himself – MCO
This reminds me a more muscular Low. Get it on last month’s Career Culture.

16.  Zombie Girlfiend – Sleeping Song
Epic slow burner off The Great Plain.

17.  Chatham Rise – Gone
This band is named after an area of the ocean floor near New Zealand. Real underwater psych drone.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 84: Mind Daze

Psychic Ills, Deerhoof, The Chambermaids, Wooden Shjips, Sleeping Bags & more

1.   Husky Rescue – Rainbow Flows
Chilling out at a hookah bar on Venus.

2.   Psychic Ills – Mind Daze
Hazy psych roots rock off Hazed Dream, due out later this month.

3.   Duelelectrum – Ultrasensor
São Paulo band gets murky on this one from Exploding Galaxy.

4.   Neutral Milk Hotel – You’ve Passed
Recent touring and reissues made me dust off this powerful drone rock classic.

5.   Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Too Real
The trip down memory lane continues with this great midtempo dream pop tune from their first album.

6.   Spectrum – How You Satisfy Me
Also recording under Sonic Boom, here the former Spacemen 3 member drops shimmering organ psych like this one from Refractions.

7.   Wooden Shjips – Black Smoke Rise
Leadoff track to new album West.

8.   Model Morning – We Go All Night
A fantastic rock and roll epic. Anyone hearing a similarity between the lead singer and Peter Gabriel?

9.   Starfire Connective Sound – Acid Morning Ride
Bombastic Brazilian rock and roll.

10.  Broken Water – Heart Strings
Fulfilling my quota of tunes inspired by Sonic Youth. Available on Exploding In Sound’s sampler.

11.  Deerhoof – Scream Team
I went to the Battles show last week. Deerhoof singer Kazu Makino was featured on a video screen singing their very cool “Swinging & Shag.” Now I’m paying it forward by dropping this gem from The Runners Four.

12.  Azma – Sweetness and Light
This melody is 100% guaranteed to get inside your head.

13.  The Chambermaids – China Blue
Twin city garage power pop. Lovely.

14.  Weekend – Hazel
Indie power pop with a splash of shoegaze.

15.  Sea Dweller – Settings
Love Is Coming track of near-perfect C86 shoegaze.

16.  The Ludvico Treatment – The Last Thing You Should Do
Blistering cover of David Bowie’s 1997 Earthling track.

17.  Sleeping Bags – Canteloupe
Released last month, this may be placed in the chillwave category. But to me it’s just a fantastic, huge tune.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 74: Unseen

Moonface, Swirlies, Younghusband, Centro-Matic, Lunch & more

1.   Miracle Fortress – Tracers

New post punk tune gets the ball rolling. This track reminds me of a far cooler version of Talking Heads. Freaky breakdown too.

2.   Moonface – Fast Peter

Wolf Parade guy gets his epic synth rock on.

3.   For Those Who Know – Competition (Drone Control Remix)

Blissed out dream pop with great washes of guitar and heavily distorted vocals.

4.   Apparat – Black Water

Producer Sascha Ring drops a slow moving dream pop beauty here.

5.   2muchachos – Magic Tanner

Glacial organ from this Russian band reminds me of some tracks from the fabulous National Parks Project.

6.   Fallen Rule – Let People Not Be Your Foundation

Heart-on-sleeve rock grandeur in the Irish tradition of U2 and The Frames.

7.   Starfyler 59 – Play The C Chord

A classic midtempo rock tune with a slight twang.

8.   Eleanor Friedberger – My Mistakes

Trying something a bit different with this track from one half of The Fiery Furnaces. Reserve judgement until the track fully kicks in.

9.   Centro-Matic – Only In My Double Mind

Texas crew brings glimmering, hopeful rock and roll with lovely harmonies. Bit of an Arcade Fire vibe.

10.  Lunch – Turn Around

Remember The Replacements? Imagine them gone shoegaze…sorta.

11.  Radical Dads – Walking Wires

80s-style indie pop from Brooklyn.

12.  Younghusband – Carousel

Song of the week! Glorious shimmering shoegaze available from RCRDLBL.

13.  Swirlies – Sound Of Sebring

Fabulous moody shoegaze from 1996’s They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons.

14.  Airiel – Airtight Angels

Yes! Swirling shoegaze rock and roll. Must play more Airiel.

15.  Bailterspace – Unseen

Air bass time! Killer nihilist shoegaze from the legendary Kiwi band’s Aim EP.

16.  White Noise Sound – Sunset

Waiting for the second coming of Spacemen 3? Look no further.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 50: Little Riot

Asobi Seksu, Yo La Tengo, No Joy, Ride, Burnt Little Sister & more

It’s our 50th episode. We’re stoked. Thanks to everyone who’s visited the site and enjoyed the mixes.

Let us know what you’d like to see more or less of on this podcast and blog. And as always, feel free to recommend great tunes.

Now back to business!

1.   Burnt Ones – Bury Me In Smoke

San Francisco group serve up The Jesus And Mary Chain crossed with Gary Glitter.

2.   The Nightblooms – Panicle

Da-da-da-da-da-duh…great noisy rock and roll from the Dutch band’s 1992 self-titled album.

3.   The Morning After Girls – Straight Through You

BJM-style psychedelia with a bit of mod swirling guitar thrown in. Be sure to check out Shadows Evolve.

4.   Spacemen 3 – Take Me To The Other Side

“I have a passion Sweet Lord…” Now we’re really going for it. Probably my favourite song in their psych drone repetoire.

5.   Merchandise – I Locked The Door

Dark post punk with buzzsaw guitars out of Tampa, Florida.

6.   Whipping Boy – Favourite Sister

Irish band plunges us into the shoegaze pool. This one’s off 1992’s Submarine.

7.   Sometimes Always – Old-Fashioned Baby

No link for this “one man” band that mixes garage with C86, but the one above gives some background and links to where you can download a copy from ePop.

8.   Asobi Seksu – Trails

Could AS be going back to their shoegaze past with new album Fluorescence? This midtempo track’s a beaut.

9.   Ride – Like A Daydream

My excitement at the pending Nowhere reissue made it inevitable that I’d include Ride in the next mix. This one’s off the Smile singles collection.

10.  No Joy – Still

Indie buzz band du jour deliver a driving shoegaze track for a late night ride.

11.  Broken Little Sister – Little Riot

Wonderful layered dream pop team from the Japanese band’s great Memories, Violets & Demons.

12.  Yo La Tengo – Little Eyes

A little riot deserves little eyes, right? This one’s for windswept plains or long drives. From the masterful Summer Sun.

13.  Rancho Relaxo – Plan Your Revolution

Close the door, shutter the windows and put on this Norweigan band’s monster midtempo psych tune.

14.  Anne – Perfect Teeth

Synth-rich number with plenty of hooks. Available for download on the band’s site.

15.  Quiet Lights – Ablaze

Brooklyn band slows it down to glacial.

16.  Adam Franklin & The Bolts Of Melody – I Want You Right Now

Their album I Can Sleep For A Thousand Years is so good I had to reach back and put another tune out. Dig this beautiful post-shoegaze ballad that could only come from the former Swervedriver frontman.

17.  Happy Showers – Shower

Synth-heavy dream pop.
