Soundtrack2 Ep. 108: No Sense

Japandroids, Grooms, Bailterspace, The Flaming Lips, Beach House & more

Post War Years

1.   Japandroids – Continuous Thunder

Kicking things off with the closing track from Celebration Rock, referred to by Songs & Cigarettes as an album “ripped from your youth.” My take? “Heroes” for a new generation.

2.   Wyla – Fill In
This band continues to impress on the solid Night Fits album. Love the Autolux vibe here.

3.   Electro Group – Green Machine
Stunner from the Lifter/Green Machine EP that has the intensity of the great Bailterspace. Wouldn’t it be great if they came out with some new music?

4.   Swervedriver – The Birds
On a bit of a late-period kick for some classic shoegaze bands. This one’s from 1998’s excellent Ejector Seat Reservation.

5.   Grooms – Dreamsucker
Some hyper Brooklyn rock and roll.

6.   Eternal Summers – Wonder
Propulsive power pop out of Virginia.

7.   Cookie Duster – Two Feet Stand Up
Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene leads a new crew to higher heights on When Flying Was Easy.

8.   Ride – Gonna Be Alright
More late period Britpop goodness off overlooked Tarantula.

9.   Bailterspace – No Sense
New music from this seminal New Zealand dark shoegaze band. Cool to see they didn’t ape their old style.

10.  Grave Babies – Fuck Off
An atmospheric, reverb-drenched anthem off Gothdammit.

11.  Pontiak – Royal Colors
Switching gears from trenchcoats to brain melting psych. That’s just how we roll.

12.  The Flaming Lips – Children Of The Moon (feat. Tame Impala)
Peeling back the onion that is the The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. So excited to hear some new TI tunes!

13.  Ombre – Cara Falsa
Pitchfork tells me this band consists of Julianna Barwick and Helado Negro. Plus their Believe You Me album is on the way.

14.  The Steals – All Coming Back
Lovely dream pop from a few years back.

15.  Beach House – Lazuli
I wasn’t crazy about first single “Myth” so I’ve slept on this album. Then this track drew me back to the mothership.

16.  Cloud –  Childhood
This chillwave track sounds like it’s been playing in my head for years.

17.  Post War Years – Glass House
Track of the week: glorious electro pop from the UK.

18.  Diiv – Wait
Some nice shoegaze from new album Oshin (get it?) on Captured Tracks.

19.  A Dancing Beggar – Stars Bring Us Closer (Franz Kirmann remix)
A slow build, but the atmosphere on this remix just transported me.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 78: Into The Wilderness

The Sunshine Factory, Kyla La Grange, The War on Drugs, I Break Horses, Myty Konkeror & more

1.   Hunters – Brat Mouth

Love this garage tune and its awesome surf punk chorus. Midsong cacophony included!

2.   Yuck – The Wall

Great rock and roll tune from Daytrotter. Kept passing this one over since it’s not what we normally play. Check out Stereogum‘s chat with them about their influences.

3.   Sleeping Bag – Slime

Good old fashioned American drone-y power pop.

4.   Folie Adieu – Sacrificial Anode

Bring on the spiralling shoegaze.

5.   Myty Konkeror – Whitewash

Really nice mid-90s indie rock vibe here. Love it! Pick it up on I Miss The Future.

6.   duel – Wisher

This Swedish band might just out-Swervedriver Swervedriver.

7.   28 Degrees Taurus – Electricity

Continuing the long tradition of great songs titled electricity (Spiritualized, Suede), this murky, psych tune is a killer. The rest of the record is, um…interesting.

8.   Lüger – Dracula’s Chaffeur Wants More

Don’t be thrown off by the kooky title. This adrenaline-fuelled ride is the real deal. Sweet buildup too.

9.   Letting Up Despite Great Faults – I Feel You Happen

Dark, beautiful whisper croon overtop pounding shoegaze. Very nice.

10.  The War On Drugs – Original Slave

Huge buzz about this album, and well deserved. This instrumental’s perfect for train rides through stawberry fields. Yes, I know that was cheesy. Dig the “Psychotic Reaction” harmonica.

11.  I Break Horses – Winter Beats

Another very buzzy band with shimmering, wistful electronic dream pop.

12.  Slow Loris – Golden Lines

Some nice afternooon slacker indie rock out of Wisconsin.

13.  Kyla La Grange – Walk Through Walls (Communion Version)

Powerful, heart-on-sleeve indie in the vein of Young Galaxy or The Besnard Lakes.

14.  The Sunshine Factory – Chainsaw Girl

Their latest – smooth pastoral dream pop.

15.  Joy Zipper – Christmas Song

Sacrilege! An organ-based psych droner oldie off American Whip.

16.  Reverie Sound Revue – I Could Be Dangerous

Hard to describe this one, but there’s a cool bossa groove here somewhere.

17.  Burning Hearts – Into The Wilderness

Widescreen 80s-influenced midtempo tune closes the show. Thank you.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 72: Blowin’ Cool

The Sky Drops, Skylar Grey, Paquin, Superhumanoids, Bloody Knives & more

1.   Zombie Girlfriend – Driving Song

Perfectly titled opener from the Baja, Hungary band.

2.   Odonis Odonis – Mr. Smith

My fellow Torontonians drop some ecstatic post punk a roll.

3.   Bloody Knives – Whatever You Want

Airy Austin dreamy shoegaze.

4.   Caged Animals – Girls On Medication

Love this wiry track and the buzzsaw guitars.

5.   Swervedriver – Blowin’ Cool

In honour of them hitting town last weekend, here’s a gem from Mezcal Head.

6.   The Sky Drops – Cut That Corner

Love listening to whatever they put out. Think The Posies with more edge. Am I the first to make this comparison?

7.   Drowner – Written

Melancholic, beautiful Cocteau Twins inspired classic shoegaze. Fantastic vocals and choruses. “When I see your face….”

8.   Paquin – Tether

New Zealand band drops this slice of shoaring shoegaze.

9.   Skylar Grey – Dance Without You

Huge, distorted tune over thumping beats. This one’s a sneak peek of her upcoming album.

10.  The Fauns – 1991

Just gorgeous shoegaze classic off their seminal self-titled album. A few weeks back they put out this fun video to update their fans.

11.  The Stone Roses – I Wanna Be Adored

Found that the lead-off track to their a truly great album slots in nicely here.

12.  Flying Saucer Attack – Wish

Running down more classics, this time a 1994 shimmering psychedelic beauty.

13.  The Dandy Warhols – Insincere

Always loved the floating in space vibe from this one, taken from Welcome To The Monkey House.

14.  Silver Swans – Mother Of Pearl

Light electronic pop tune with a hint of 60’s girl group.

15.  Superhumanoids – Mikelah

Fantastic, inspirational track that brings to mind the fabulousness of Stars or Young Galaxy.

16.  Starfire Connective Sound – Electric Whore

Brazil band drops some mysterious, dark techno.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 59: Last Winter

Mogwai, Papercuts, PJ Harvey, Big Troubles, Akron/Family & more

1.   PJ Harvey – Written On The Forehead

The latest from new record Let England Shake. Dream pop mixed with dub by the constantly-evolving Ms. Harvey.

2.   New Animal – Last Winter

“I never wanna listen…” Imagine taking a train ride through the sunny countryside, and everyone’s got a beard.

3.   Silohs – A Zealot Sun

Fleet Foxes meet Mercury Rev. This one’s off Shed Your Summer.

4.   Papercuts – Do What You Will

Indie pop (break-up tune?) with a melody that gets trapped in your head. One of many greats from Fading Parade.

5.   Baby Giraffe – Understatement

Toronto representing with a distorted stew that gives way to driving, space-y singalong.

6.   Akron/Family – Silly Bears

Ecstatic, bombastic rock and roll anthem from their latest, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT. Not to be confused with Silly Rabbit.

7.   Liars – Rose and Licorice

This one – from 2002’s Atheists, Reconsider, their split with Oneida – could have come out yesterday.

8.   n o i – Adelaide

Tennessee band drop a glammy dose of Archers of Loaf goodness from S e v e n. Clearly this band likes to have spaces.

9.   Swervedriver – Pile-up

Great riffs + dark groove + restless energy = this fantastic band. Get it on Raise. I just LOVE what passed for a “guitar solo” in the Swervedriver camp.

10.  Power Of Dreams – Suburbia

Irish 90’s era shoegaze/Britpop. Seems an ode to a woman who married too young.

11.  Big Troubles – Georgia

Shimmering shoegaze by New Jersey band.

12.  Belong – Perfect Life

Like this post punk track, with heavy current of bass noise.

13.  Mogwai – How To Be A Werewolf

Hot off their out-this-week Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. These guys know how to do post-rock without putting me to sleep. Inspirational.

14.  True Womanhood – Minajah

And now for something completely different. Dark, almost industrial tune that you probably shouldn’t listen to if you’re home alone. Available here.
