Soundtrack2 Ep. 99: Explosion
Errors, Pontiak, Rancho Relaxo, Bright Channel, Paul Weller & more
No jangling harmonies this week as we go deep and dark.
1. Pond – Fantastic Explosion Of Time
Blast of psychedelic pop from members of S2 faves Tame Impala. Can definitely hear some of their signature guitar sound here too.
2. Pontiak – Left with Lights
Bombastic track from their fabulous new Echo Ono album. Facemelters unite!
3. Paul Weller – Around The Lake
Not sure if his Farfisa psych song is a parody or an homage, but thought I’d throw it on since he’s coming to Toronto soon.
4. Free Electric State – We’ll Have A Great Funeral (When You Die)
Isn’t it great how waves of feedback transform a straight-up indie rock tune?
5. Al Lover – Death Ride In San Francisco
January’s Heavy Hippies has a lot of samples from well-known classic rock jams. Like this one because the riff isn’t easy to pick out and the bassline just kills.
6. Illogical Time Concerns – Copac
Former Collider bandmates get freaky on this gem from their latest Sea Ex.
7. Queens Of The Stone Age – River In The Road
Always liked this slightly trippy tune from Era Vulgaris.
8. Rancho Relaxo – I Want You
A new one from this excellent band’s Happy Friday Experiment. Great acoustic psych drone.
9. The Blue Angel Lounge – Die Away As One In Time
Loveliness: “I wanna hold you forever…”
10. Swoon 23 – Fire Hanger
Dark rock and roll from 1997’s Legendary Ether Pony.
11. Dopedrone & Naked On My Own – Tunnel
Epic headtrip about the journey inside a mind. Turn off the lights for this one.
12. DeadCAT – Evitan
Love this Atlanta band’s dark glitchy groove.
13. Surji – Scream Of A Wean
This murky tune comes off the aptly-named Existentialism.
14. Bright Channel – Airborne
The guitars come out again. Sounds like Yo La Tengo in a sinister mood.
15. Air Formation – In Formation
Soaring dream pop from this band that called it a day last year.
16. Errors – Magna Encarta
Scottish label mates of Mogwai and Part Chimp head skyward. Check out their solid latest album Have Some Faith In Magic.
