We’re 100. Yay.
Now let’s get on with another mix of killer tunes.
1. A Place To Bury Strangers – You Are The One
We start off our 100th episode with the band that has kicked off our podcasts the most. When you listen to their latest Joy Division meets JAMC jam, you’ll understand why.
3. Abschaum – Moonlight
Hypnotic boogie music for trenchcoat wearers.
4. Averkiou – Fuzzy Photograph
Crunching power pop off February’s The New Imperative. Love the guitar (?) noise solo.
5. Taffy – Haah
Stirring Japanese shoegaze. Guess they couldn’t think of a good title, so a simple “Haah” fit the bill.
6. The Wedding Present – You’re Dead
I wasn’t really feeling this initially, but it grew on me. Gedge gives us the gears at the chorus, with a bit of Mark E. Smith phrasing.
7. Airiel – Flashlight Tag
Amazing to hear new music from this band.
8. Grass Widow – Walking Out On Love
More classic power pop goodness, but GW’s female vocals provide a shoegaze edge.
10. Whirr – Toss
This Pipe Dreams twee pop tune just mesmerizes.
12. Lightfoils – Sympathy Lies
Bright, soaring shoegaze pop from
13. John Maus – No Title (Molly)
Get down with your bad self, Mr. Maus. If this is a joke, please don’t end it.
14. Dead Mellotron – Stranger
Sucks when you sit on a killer dream pop tune so long that ANOTHER one comes out from the same band before you get to it.
15. Vinyl Williams – Chroma Heart
Hazy anthem starts with “The end is near” and then declares “you’re in my heart.” Check out his new Ultimate World EP.
17. Soul Glimpse – Fade & Breath
One of the few ambient tracks I’ve wanted to drop. Listen closely and listen loud.
18. Irene On Edge – Time Fly
Hypnotic full kilter noise with oddly beautiful garbled voices.
19. Mr. Gnome – The Way
Unbelievable chillwave (or is it witch house?) that is the perfect soundtrack to a waltz in another dimension.
Death In Vegas, 93 Million Miles From The Sun, Odonis Odonis, Tearjerker, Ringo Deathstarr & more
There’s a ridiculous amount of good music coming out these days. I’ve eased back on my vault digging and pushed well beyond one hour this week! Enjoy…
1. Fevers – Passion Is Dead (Long Live Fashion)
Smash! Did the opening chord get your attention? Huge dancefloor dreaminess from Ottawa, Ontario that’s stuck in my head.
2. Elika – We Have Failed
The party continues until you get hit with this heavy chorus.
3. The Mekano Set – You Make Me Feel Like A Cure Song
Bit of death disco out of the UK. Check out their latest album Fades.
7. Tearjerker – Down
Cool CanCon from their excellent Rare album. A band to keep an eye on.
8. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – These Days
Integalactic garage rock. Check out this Mexican band’s mighty On Welfare album.
9. Odonis Odonis – Basic Training
Two minutes of glammy garage. Yet another great Canadian band (I’m stacking the deck this week, it seems) with a new album out – check out the fantastic Hollandaze.
10. Imandra Lake – Ole Mu Laev
Estonian band takes us to beautiful widescreen.
11. 93 Million Miles From The Sun – Time Lasts Forever
Never been a huge fan of this band. But songs like this from their latest album Northern Sky are starting to win me over.
12. Vinyl Williams – Stellarscope
Groovy mellow goodness that seems to be from Egypt.
13. Range Lover – Route Nationale Sexe
Very nice hybrid of krautrock and shoegaze with vocal samples. Hard to find many details on this band though…
14. The Two Koreas – Boy Teen Oslo
An oldie but goodie from Toronto stalwarts with a style all their own.
15. Cousins – Droit Du Seigneur
Bright noisy postpunk off Axthoxy.
16. Silver Dapple – M’Sorry
Montreal noise pop rounds out the Canadian bill.
18. Borax – Sunshine Boy
Estonia representing twice on one mix! Dig this older indie pop track off Tallinn.
19. Para Siempre – Where Would You Be (Without Me)
Yes! Closing with an intense ringing garage rock anthem.
Al Lover, Boris, SPC ECO, Girl Loves Distortion, Blouse & more
Burning up, then fading away…
1. Spacemen 3 – Starship
How the blues should’ve turned out – from the 2007 rarities album of the same name.
2. Darker My Love – Blue Day
Shredding glam garage rock and roll.
3. Verma – Salted Earth
Imagine “Radar Love” played by a bunch of motorik-obsessed psych heads.
4. Outrageous Cherry – Girl You Have Magic Inside You
’67 psychedelia re-incarnated.
5. Thee Oh Sees – The Dream
Slightly abrasive, yet stellar ringing garage.
6. Al Lover – Black Magick Starter Jacket
Killer throbbing psych drone anthem from Satanic Tambourine. Almost asked how I had never heard of him before, but then I remembered his Beefheart tribute. This is way better.
7. Girl Loves Distortion – Psychic Raygun
Been wanting to play this one for ages…yes.
8. Vinyl Williams – Higher Worlds
Nice, slightly off-kilter groove here.
9. Boris – Spoon
You had me at the intro. This is what shoegaze is all about. Thrilling track from upcoming record New Album, due Nov. 25.
10. Lush – The Invisible Man
This band’s never been among my fave early shoegaze bands, but they’re definitely under-represented on S2.
Broken Social Scene member’s tune gets the glitchy electronic treatment. Pick ’em both up at the link above.
14. The Blanche Hudson Weekend – Screen Test
Can’t say I love everything on their new album You Always Loved Violence. But this lonely desert ballad’s drone drew me in.
16. Zombie Girlfiend – Sleeping Song
Epic slow burner off The Great Plain.
17. Chatham Rise – Gone
This band is named after an area of the ocean floor near New Zealand. Real underwater psych drone.
