Soundtrack2 Ep. 93: Night Owl

Frankie Rose, Trespassers William, Caveman, The Spits, Apteka & more

1.   The Spits – Last Man On Earth
5…4…3…Wake up with this new off-kilter space punk.

2.   Digital Leather – Young Doctors In Love
Facebook page doesn’t reveal much, but loving this album’s melodic post punk and killer chorus. And I’m not even a doctor.

3.   Germans – No Job
Rock and roll from a few years back that somehow reminds me of a Torontonian British Sea Power.

4.   Car Seat Headrest – Bodys
Ah, Brooklyn. Six minutes of stream-of-consciousness vocals and ecstatic indie rock.

5.   Dream Brother – Pretty Eyes
A bit poppy for us, but this song is just so damn catchy!

6.   Frankie Rose – Know Me
Lots of buzz about the latest single from Ms. Rose. Pure 80s swinging pop a la Sarah Records. Check out upcoming album Interstellar.

7.   Field Mouse – You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom
Some wistful, dreamy pop out of Brooklyn.

8.   A Classic Education – Night Owl
Slowing it down. Lovely guitar work. Find it on October’s Call It Blazing.

9.  Trespassers William – And We Lean In
Though they decided to call it a day, here’s a great acoustic-ish number from Having.

10.  Yo La Tengo – Pablo and Andrea
An Electr-O-Pura classic. “Show me where you hide all your secrets upstairs…” Love when the guitars come in.

11.  Caveman – Easy Water
The track of the week comes from Coco Beware, a fantastic record released last fall. The mysterious intensity of this track stood out for me.

12.  Red Horses Of The Snow – Airborne
Brilliant song that seems like an instant mellow shoegaze anthem. And what a voice!

13.  Brief Candles – Permafrost
One of many fabulous tracks on WTSH‘s superb 200,000 Gazes compilation. Love that Ride bass.

14.  Aerofall – Up’s & Down’s
Straightforward, almost hypnotic chord progression with layers and layers of guitar.

15.  The Hang Ups – Sweet Tooth
A nice one from the 90s indie rock heroes So We Go album.

16.  Pale Saints – Angel (Will You Be My)
Blistering shoegaze pop tune that’s perfect for dancing around your bedroom.

17.  Luminous Orange – Walkblind
Superplastic stunner by the Japanese shoegazers.

18.  Apteka – Gravesend
Very excited to hear new stuff from this band. In their words: “We play rock music. We like large kick drums, tube amplification, and face melting.” Hear hear.

Soundtrack2 Ep. 73: Runes

Soren Well, Austra, Highspire, Balam Acab, Appliance & more

1.   Austra – Hate Crime

Funky thumping electro pop tune that gets stuck inside your head.

2.   Still Corners – Cuckoo

Desolate 3 a.m. torch song outta the UK.

3.   Arrange – Blinds With You

Probably the first Florida band I’ve ever featured. Just gorgeous tune for a rainy day.

4.   Balam Acab – Oh Why

Heartbreaking soulful electronic swan song with lovely vocal samples.

5.   Active Child – Body Heat (So Far Away)

Electronic soul soundtrack to a lost 80s film. Imagine Bon Iver with a sampler and drum machine.

6.   Yo La Tengo – Autumn Sweater

The groovy indie rock classic.

7.   Flavor Crystals – Church Fuzz

Midwestern band starts with a slow dirge and then breaks into mesmerizing krautrock.

8.   Appliance – Return To Telemark

Motorik pscyh off last year’s epic 3-CD Re-Conditioned. Well worth getting.

9.   The Secret Machines – Nowhere Again

One from the borderline space rock band’s classic Now Here Is Nowhere.

10.  S.C.U.M – Amber Hands

Exciting, glammy Suede-style psychedelic rock and roll.

11.  Dirty Pulp Theatre – Shining Soul

Digging this 90s style indie rock.

12.  Soren Well – Honey On Fire

New JAMC-lite shoegaze tune that’s made me want to dig into some of their older stuff.

13.  Highspire – Glass In My Mouth

The highlight of this week’s mix. Classic Ride-influenced shoegaze.

14.  Lilys – Claire Hates Me

Such a simple riff and chords, but it’s just fantastic. “I am Kane…I’m not Abel…” Kurt really needs to get on some new stuff.

15.  Burrrn – Eyes In Motion

Mod rock and roll with fantastic distorted bass. I’d kill to see this played live.

16.  Iceage – White Rune

Mental punk overload. Need to play more stuff like this. Any recommendations?

Soundtrack2 Ep. 50: Little Riot

Asobi Seksu, Yo La Tengo, No Joy, Ride, Burnt Little Sister & more

It’s our 50th episode. We’re stoked. Thanks to everyone who’s visited the site and enjoyed the mixes.

Let us know what you’d like to see more or less of on this podcast and blog. And as always, feel free to recommend great tunes.

Now back to business!

1.   Burnt Ones – Bury Me In Smoke

San Francisco group serve up The Jesus And Mary Chain crossed with Gary Glitter.

2.   The Nightblooms – Panicle

Da-da-da-da-da-duh…great noisy rock and roll from the Dutch band’s 1992 self-titled album.

3.   The Morning After Girls – Straight Through You

BJM-style psychedelia with a bit of mod swirling guitar thrown in. Be sure to check out Shadows Evolve.

4.   Spacemen 3 – Take Me To The Other Side

“I have a passion Sweet Lord…” Now we’re really going for it. Probably my favourite song in their psych drone repetoire.

5.   Merchandise – I Locked The Door

Dark post punk with buzzsaw guitars out of Tampa, Florida.

6.   Whipping Boy – Favourite Sister

Irish band plunges us into the shoegaze pool. This one’s off 1992′s Submarine.

7.   Sometimes Always – Old-Fashioned Baby

No link for this “one man” band that mixes garage with C86, but the one above gives some background and links to where you can download a copy from ePop.

8.   Asobi Seksu – Trails

Could AS be going back to their shoegaze past with new album Fluorescence? This midtempo track’s a beaut.

9.   Ride – Like A Daydream

My excitement at the pending Nowhere reissue made it inevitable that I’d include Ride in the next mix. This one’s off the Smile singles collection.

10.  No Joy – Still

Indie buzz band du jour deliver a driving shoegaze track for a late night ride.

11.  Broken Little Sister – Little Riot

Wonderful layered dream pop team from the Japanese band’s great Memories, Violets & Demons.

12.  Yo La Tengo – Little Eyes

A little riot deserves little eyes, right? This one’s for windswept plains or long drives. From the masterful Summer Sun.

13.  Rancho Relaxo – Plan Your Revolution

Close the door, shutter the windows and put on this Norweigan band’s monster midtempo psych tune.

14.  Anne – Perfect Teeth

Synth-rich number with plenty of hooks. Available for download on the band’s site.

15.  Quiet Lights – Ablaze

Brooklyn band slows it down to glacial.

16.  Adam Franklin & The Bolts Of Melody – I Want You Right Now

Their album I Can Sleep For A Thousand Years is so good I had to reach back and put another tune out. Dig this beautiful post-shoegaze ballad that could only come from the former Swervedriver frontman.

17.  Happy Showers – Shower

Synth-heavy dream pop.

It’s hot. Real hot. Need to be cooled down or get the blood boling?

Listen & enjoy.

1. Windsor For The Derby – Queen Of The Sun

Lovely dream pop from upcoming album Against Love.

2.   Stripmall Architecture – Pripyat

Can’t get this one out of my head. Download the elements to remix this yourself.

3. Phillip Eno – Your Name

More fuzzed out dream pop. The band has made this song and a lot more available for free download on their site.

4. Flavor Crystals – Ambergris

A bit of Yo La Tengo vibe here. One of many great tracks on the Minneapolis band’s Ambergris album.

5. Alcoholic Faith Mission – My Eyes To See

Nervy Danish band deliver passionate indie pop.

6. Nikoo – Marquee

Been listening to this hard-to-describe band for a while. Their self-titled album is very good.

7.   Sea Exchange – Schemes

Bit of shoegaze indie pop here. Both of their EPs are great and available for free.

8. Dropping Honey – Foveaux

Watch out! This track by this Sydney, Australia band starts funky but gets huge and noisy.

9. Sennen – Can’t See The Light

Not a huge fan of this band, but their most recent tracks are less murky. This dark shoegaze track is off last month’s Age of Denial.

10.  Garageland – Never Gonna Come Round Here Again

Flying Nun band brings some driving rock and roll off 1996′s Last Exit To Garageland.

11. Ursula Minor – Westphalia

Killer Krautrock. Be sure to check out this Glasgow band’s varied Laudanum album.

12. Band In Heaven – Tunnel Into Your Dreams

Ambient rock off their free demos bandcamp page.

13. School of Seven Bells – Babelonia

Disconnect From Desire won’t be out until July, but this is more than enough to keep me satisfied.

14. Swathes – Very White

Noisy, dense industrial/shoegaze builder.

15.  K-X-P – 18 Hours (Of Love)

According to XLR8R, this band provides “Spaced-out Krautrock-meets-drummy-disco dance party.” Can’t find any info online so here’s a good Altsounds post.

Sountrack2 Audiocast36: All to All

Yo La Tengo, Broken Social Scene, Crash City Saints, Televise, Dubstar & more

Ooh lots of good new stuff this time round. Happy yet?

1. Broken Social Scene – All To All

Off Forgiveness the Rock Record out on May 4. Nice to see them evolving their sound here. Different but still very much Broken Social Scene. Who’s that singing though?

2. Deastro – Mowgli The Lynx

Ethereal space pop out of Detroit.

3. Color of Clouds – Let Go

Very groovy dreaminess from Brooklyn-based band’s Satellite of Love.

4. Dubstar – I’m In Love With A German Film Star

I’m digging this one off the Peace! project. Not sure why…maybe the climax at the end?

5. Sweet Trip – Design : 2: 3

Mindscrambling journey to the edge.

6. Yo La Tengo – Sugarcube

Classic stuff from seminal band. One of our all-time faves.

7. Crash City Saints – Broke

Ripping shoegaze number from the new, excellent Glow In The Dark Music album. Turn it up!

8. The Boo Radleys – Everybird

Boo Up! EP track provides more distorted sweetness.

9. Savages – Plain and Simple

Gainesville’s finest deliver loud indie rock from their Graveyard Cities album.

10. Catherine Wheel – Intravenous

Balloon EP gem. Hope it’s still nice and loud for this one.

11.  Werewolves – I Need You

Gutsy rock and roll by curious American band whose MySpace descriptor is “we sell soul.”

12. All The Saints – Outs

Fire On Corridor X slow burner builds and then crashes into the choruses.

13. Gravenhurst – Trust

Catherine Wheel-indebted loveliness from 2007′s The Western Lands. “Trust is a hard thing to come by these days.”

14. The Falling Spikes – Cellophane

Mellow psych dirge ballad out of Yorkshire.

15. Picnic – Too Fast

Estonian dream pop of the highest order. Strongly recommend checking out the Winter Honey record.

16. Televise – Smile

Simon Scott of Slowdive provides an epic, transcendent ending.
